Godfather 1 or 2?

Rewatching the second one and seeing the Corlenone origin story really pushes this one slightly ahead of the first imo.

1 is still superior to me because end the Brando and Sonny factor, plus I enjoy seeing the "pre-evil" Michael.
I also used to enjoy the Coreleone origin story in 2 more, but now I like the Michael/Tahoe/Cuba stuff better.

Michael Corleone in Godfather 2 is gangster as frick. So 2 gets my vote.

2 for me but I need to watch them again

Vito going back to kill the guy who killed his mom is pretty gangster, too.

I prefer 1 to 2 by a hair. They are both phenomenal.

In my mind there are only 2 sequels that top the original. Empire Strikes Back and Godfather part 2. Really like The Godfather Epic though, if I have 7 1/2 hours to burn to watch it. I recommend that for those who haven't seen it. It puts the 2 movies together in chronological order and adds deleted scenes

Definitely 2 for me. I love the first one but two is so well done. Deniro was great as young Vito.

1, primarily because I think it shows more of the life outside of the business, and the contrast between the naivety of those who benefit from these brutal guys who can be joking and familial one moment and whacking someone the next. And Michael and Diane are still sort of normal humans, at least at the beginning of the movie. 2 is a great work of course, but it's a continuation of that story.

1 is a contained work and Michael has a full character arc
2 has the Vito backstory but Michael isn't all that interesting

Meh, give me American Gangster instead. Can't top an angry Denzel.

Part 1 for me. It's a more compelling story and they could have trimmed a little more fat from part 2. But they are two of the greatest movies ever.

I used to say The Godfather Part II but recent viewings have pushed The Godfather over the top for me. The progression of Michael's character over the course of the film is simply extraordinary. He goes from a peaceful everyday man, someone who rejects his family and his origins, to one of the coldest and baddest gangsters in New York.

1 for me for many reasons. The Wedding Scene was amazing. Then there is horse heads, Luca, Sonnys notorious temper, white powder, sit downs of the 5 families, and the transition of Michael.
If you have never read the book you are doing yourself a major disservice. There are things that are said in the movie that wont be understood without the depth of the book.

This is how I feel about them myself, I prefer 1 because of that. The Vito parts in 2 are excellent, but the rest of the story is pretty meh. 1 is great start to finish.

I like G1 slightly better.
