Are more parents going to schools during lunch to spend time w/ their kids?

What is the deal with parents going to their kids' school for lunch to just spent time/have a "lunch date" with them? I don't mean during school sponsored events like Mom Mondays or Doughnuts with Dad. But like a random Wednesday, &/or multiple times a week.
I was asked why I don't do lunch dates with my kids yesterday at the PTA meeting. I'm a recent widowed father of 4 & my tired knee jerk reaction was "because I don't want to give other kids a reason to beat my kids up.....?"
I was asked to leave the meeting.
Then received a call from the school board office where they issued an apology to me & asked me to try to be more sensitive at future meetings & school functions that I plan to attend.
After some reflection, I'm looking to the OT to help me understand.

never heard of parents eating lunch with their kids on random days. they should be spending that time socializing with their own friends and learning how to interact with kids their age.

1. You must live in a great residential area.
2. You must live in an area that has above average school(s).
3. Your child does not attend LaBelle Aire Elementary, Dalton Elementary, Lanier Elementary or Crestworth Middle or Glen Oaks Middle School.

Personally, I love the elementary school lunch for under $5. It's fun to hang out with the kids when they still think you are cool and don't embarrass them.

Daycare often does these holiday lunches, I feel terrible about going though because your child is expecting to go home when you arrive. Having to tell them no, you still have to stay, really sucks for you and them.

I wouldn't want random adults around my kids at school.

It's pretty simple. If you want to go hang out with your kid at lunch, go for it. If, like most people, you can't, then don't. It's not a big deal.
Oh and school is very different now than when you went. Nerds are cool and you look stupid one strapping your jansport. Watch 21 Jump Street. They get it.

You might have a better chance of getting laid at The Cadillac in BR.

WTF? I can see where in today's world it would be a thing, but I would have been embarrassed if my parents ever came to school.
No shite. There was this kid who came to my HS. I think he transferred from another school.. Early in the year. He was a dork and people already gave him a hard time, but for his birthday, his mother (and I think some other woman) decided they were going to show up and do the whole birthday thing.. At lunch. He mom was dressed like a bunny and I think the other person was dressed up as well, but when the cafeteria figured out what was going on, everyone was laughing at him. I think is mom thought they were laughing "with" them and that she was dressed up like a bunny.
Anyway, I had a class with him and I think it the class was right after lunch.. It had to be because his mom came into class before it started, but on the way to class, she couldn't see that well in the costume and she ran into the center of double doors.. I didn't see it, but I heard people laughing. That poor kid.. he got picked on for the rest of the school year for that. But I guess these days it would be cool.

Apparently this is pretty commonplace these days. And my second grader says most of the parents bring in fast food for the lunch date too.

I'm kinda curious as to what's the apology for
Because if it went down exactly as you said they fricked up twice. Sending you home, and asking you why don't you stop by and have lunch with your kids as if there is the slightest thing wrong with not doing it.

I've noticed that on some of my friends' facebook things. It's a regular occurrence lately it seems like.
While I would never do it, to each their own I guess. Although those meatpies we had back when I was in school would make it tempting.

Michelle Obama's nutritional school lunches really worked out.

Tell whoever asked you why you don't go to school lunch because you're a single parent who has to go to work to support 4 kids. Most of the parents I see at every single school function or staying in the schoolyard through morning assembly are all stay-at-home moms with nothing better to do with their lives. Kids want to socialize with their friends and school lunch and recess is their only real time to do that during the school day, and once kids reach a certain age having their parents always around at school is embarrassing.
