SWG pre-NGE really wasn't all that great -- at least initially. Practically the only content was running to a terminal then running for days to a monster den, blowing it up, then coming back.
Well sure for the first month or so of the release.
If PvE was all you did, then the game would have sucked.
However PvP was always the endgame and all gear being player crafted was what really made it work. Only downside was that killing the mind bar was the only objective for a while as buffs got so great.
Player cities and faction controlled bases was the real fun

quote:The game had flaws without a doubt. That said, I've yet to see non-combatant characters play such a massive role in a game like I see in SWG. As a poster earlier mentioned, you can be a master of a craft, say weaponsmith, and be an extremely valuable member of the community.

The Jedi aspect in pre-NGE had flaws, but it was also fantastic for the game. I've also never seen a game since SWG where players could take out hits on other players that was actually a part of gameplay. A Jedi who kept swinging his lightsaber in the eyes of the public was inevitably hunted down by Bounty Hunters. Whether said Jedi died or not depends on how the PvP battle went obviously

The lag fest that was Coronet early. It was hilarious and I played right through it. Run three steps and then lag for five and rinse, repeat.

I remember on an crappy machine, You could port into Theed and only see like 20 feet as it tried to render the distance.
Plus whenever more than about 30 people engaged in a PvP battle, the game would just lag and you were down on the ground incapacitated.
Hell has any other game introduced a "deathblow" mechanic yet.

Archeage was fun back in the day now they have the fresh start servers with 20 hour queues lols.
Marvel heroes Brother and me play this its actually not that bad.
Planetside 2 Main game Mmo i play actually daybreaks support is shite. Would be amazing with a great team.
Guildwars 2 Still play this with my clan even though it has dwindled a bit.
Old Conquer Online Before it became super Asian was a great MMorpg
Maplestory This game was great when it first came out actually.
Warhammer online was a great worldvsworld pvp game before it got ate.
Wow is WoW
Everquest 1 still play it actually lol
Everquest 2 was a Goat quest game.
Mu Online Really fun I was a Beta tester for it.
Dungeons and dragons online. Cash game but it has alot of good things.
Neverwinter mmorpg is fun but like DnD online is a cash game.
Alot more but none that really shine.

The corpse run in SWG was also the most brutal I've seen. I think it was only in game for a month or so. Corpse runs back to the krayt graveyard sucked.
Initially you could lose stuff if you didn't recover your corpse and freaking Corellian butterflies were tough to kill at first with the early crappy weapons and no armor yet. Damn those were some good times.
I still play the EMU a little.

Also the fact that scenarios or whatever they called them were the fastest way to level mean that RvR was largely empty except for max level.
Yeah it was definitely a race to end game to play PvP. But the ladder style campaign maps where the front would move gradually based on your realm's success was genius. Cap that off with seiging the other faction's home city at the end. There hasn't been a PvP layout as ambitious as that since. Maybe ESO can begin to scratch that itch, but it still misses the mark of actually capturing the feel of a moving front line over miles of territory. And then that satisfaction of the massive city battle at the end.
Oh the nostalgia...
Also, The Bastion Stair was the coolest MMO raid ever created. It was a terrifying beauty to behold. I always imagined that's what hell was like.

I played a lot of free to play MMO's as a kid. Stuff like Tales of Pirates, FLYFF, TalesRunner, ForbiddenMu, Perfect World, etc.
In terms of free to play, nothing is better than Cabal Online. Still log on every now and then to this day. Super fun dungeons and the combat system is ridiculously fun. Armor isn't very diverse, but the crafting/upgrading system is involved enough to keep that from being a hindrance as that alone gives enough diversity in the attributes of the gear itself.
ArchAge was really fun too. Wish I had given it more time than I did.
TERA had fun combat, but it was ridiculously grindy. Turned me off by level 25.
MMO's I've payed for start with Guild Wars 2. I actually got pretty heavy into this game. WvWvW was an awesome change to what I was used to in MMO's. Late game content got stale after a while, though.
Black Desert needs no introduction. Awesome game with a shite ton of stuff to do. The only real reason I quit playing was because I didn't have enough time to justify being active in such a demanding game.
Now my current obsession, WoW. I kept myself from snorting this cocaine for over a decade. Justifying free to play MMO's being good enough to keep from subbing. It's been a month and I'm hooked. There's no hope for me here. RIP my social life.

All of the ones I've tried?
Everquest - a classic, first of its kind.
EQ2 - WoW on hard mode
WoW - EQ2 on easy mode
LOTRO - Was pretty fun, but DPS outpaces most everything else
GW2 - Fun, but crafting is bloody heck near useless
SWTOR - A lot of fun, great solo play and fun story line
Star Trek - It's okay, the storylines are more fun. End-level battles are dang near impossible.
Star Wars Galaxies - Was amazing before they screwed with the class system
City of Heroes - Was okay, had fun in it
DC Universe Online - Not enough selection in powers
EVE Online - F&*^ No.

The class change killed SWG, not the Jedi aspect (unless you mean making Jedi common with the class change)

No, the entire point of SWG in it's later years before the NGE was the grind to get a jedi. That was all literally anyone was doing in the game once how to unlock them became common knowledge

There is now.
Tanking powers = Fire, Ice, Rage (Red Lantern), Atomic (Nuclear), Earth
Healing powers = Sorcery, Nature, Celestial, Water, Lightning
Controller powers = Mental, Gadget, Quantum (Time), Hard Light (Green/Yellow Lantern), Munitions
Everything can be a DPS

quote:Too many MMOs and too many of them dedicated to the grind with too many other attractive entertainment options out there. Games like FF14 that are less about the grind and more about keeping people happy are going to be the only ones that will survive with new gamers having increasingly smaller attention spans.
they cycle has been moving away from MMO's for a while it seems. Maybe once they go back out of style someone will come back around to make one that's worth a shite and original. I had all my eggs in the EQ Next basket, but someone decided to shite rocks all over that basket of eggs and destroy them.

I'll play along with this thread:
Seriously played
1. Star Wars Galaxies. Loved every minute of it. By far the best crafting and social aspect I have ever seen in an MMO and it had fully customization housing. WoW killed its momentum and they panicked and tried to simplify to take on WoW and failed at it.
2. Guild Wars 2. Very fun and very good PVP but that was about it. Story was pretty blah but the PVP was a lot of fun.
3. Elder Scrolls Online. I absolutely fricking hated it on PC when it first came out and tried it again when it dropped on XBone and really enjoyed it there. PVP was fun, the story was really good and there just wasn't a lot of downside outside of time. I jump back on from time to time.
4. Rift. I had a really good time with this game and was a raid leader in my guild. My guild voted to merge with another raid guild when numbers got thin and those guys were absolute dickholes to deal with, they ran a DKP but got mad if someone outbid them for an item. I left not wanting to deal with them.
Tried and didn't like:
1. Star Trek. wasn't bad but I didn't get into it at all, cancelled my preorder after doing one of the final betas.
2. WoW. Hated the graphics and hated just about everything else about it. Making the leap from Galaxies to it made it even tougher.
3. Old Republic. Wanted to love it but long queues to get in early just pissed me off and then when I finally was able to play I couldn't like it enough. Tried some of the PVP games and wanted to like them and just didn't.
4. Lord of the Rings. Wanted to like it but it was just another MMO and didn't want to invest time into something not exceptional.
5. Some Pirate mmo made by Bethesda or someone that I thought might be good and was a fricking turd.

Just went and loaded up UO and headed to UOGamers: Hybrid. Apparently the server owner has all but abandoned everything but left the server running. Account on the shard was about 9 years old. Previously had my OSI account prior to that one for about 10 years. Sad stuff.
Anyone who has played UO and still plays MMOs - is there anything close to UO but current with populated servers?
