Rouse's Leg Quarters Sale!

The wife has been on a little bit of a soup kick lately so I decided to make some homemade chicken soup. I was going to pick up a whole chicken or two but Rouse's has chicken leg quarters $2.90 for a ten pound bag. Can't beat that price and the dark meat has better flavor too. So I picked up a bag yesterday and this morning I put them on to simmer for a while to cook the chicken for deboning and to get a nice stock from it. Of course they are frozen in one chunk but not a problem. As they thawed and separated I realized that these are some nice meaty leg quarters so I'll definitely stop back and pick up another one or two bags for grilling. I was surprised as I thought they'd be scrawny and fatty but these are nice!
I thought I'd pass this on in case some like a good leg quarter or want to do as I'm doing with making a nice soup.

now thats how you make a pot of gumbo for $5 that will feed 30 people!!
@ 29 cents/lb you can dump TEN POUNDS of chicken into your gumbo for $3

Ironic calling that kind of chicken "yard bird"

I've found a few small feathers attached to the ones of bought. No big deal, just look closely and have a pair of pliers.

You've never heard it called that?

I know a chicken is referred to as a "yard bird." Was just noting that those particular chickens in that $3 bag of leg quarters have never seen a yard

Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna go grab a few bags.

Opinions on thawing enough to break the chunk of chicken into smaller portions and refreezing them separately? I don't usually have much use for 10 pounds of chicken at a time

That's the dilemma. I think I'll just smoke most of the bag tomorrow and eat the 75-cent loss.

Smoke it all. Make smoked chicken quesadillas or smoked chicken salad with leftovers.

I remember buying leg quarters on sale in the late 80s for that same price, and it was a bargain 25+ years ago.
Now it's practically free.
