Climate change expert sentenced to 32 months, says lying was a 'rush'

The EPA’s highest-paid employee and a leading expert on climate change was sentenced to 32 months in federal prison Wednesday for lying to his bosses and saying he was a CIA spy working in Pakistan so he could avoid doing his real job.
John C. Beale’s crimes were “inexplicable” and “unbelievably egregious," said Judge Ellen Huvelle in imposing the sentence in a Washington. D.C. federal court. Beale has also agreed to pay $1.3 million in restitution and forfeiture to the government.
Beale said he was ashamed of his lies about working for the CIA, a ruse that, according to court records, began in 2000 and continued until early this year.
“Why did I do this? Greed – simple greed – and I’m ashamed of that greed,” Beale told the court. He also said it was possible that he got a “rush” and a “sense of excitement" by telling people he was worked for the CIA. “It was something like an addiction,” he said.
Beale pled guilty in September to bilking the government out of nearly $1 million in salary and other benefits over a decade. He perpetrated his fraud largely by failing to show up at the EPA for months at a time, including one 18-month stretch starting in June 2011 when he did “absolutely no work,” as his lawyer acknowledged in a sentencing memo filed last week.
When Huvelle asked Beale what he was doing when he claimed he was working for the CIA, he said, "I spent time exercising. I spent a lot of time working on my house."
He also said he used the time "trying to find ways to fine tune the capitalist system" to discourage companies from damaging the environment. "I spent a lot of time reading on that," said Beale.
Prosecutor Jim Smith said Beale's crimes made him a "poster child for what is wrong with government."

Government accountability of its employees is non-existent.

The worst polluter in the US is the federal government. He should have tried there.

Guess there wasn't that much climate change for the climate change scientist to actually study.

How is that even possible? His supervisors are just as culpable IMO.

This isn't an anomaly. There have been many cases where government employees in high ranking positions just haven't shown up to work for months at a time and no one noticed.

Oh people notice. They just know firing a gov employee is harder than finding a unicorn.

You rob a liquor store for $60 and a pack of Kools and you get 5-20 years (5 mandatory minimum).
You steal a million you get 1 year in minimum security prison (less than half - 32 months - are ever served.)
You steal 100 million, you get a golden parachute from the government and a stern warning.
Difference in all this... First guy had a gun. You can steal millions and ruin people's lives and retirement savings but God forbid you have a gun when you steal.

So you don't agree that threatening people's lives with a gun is a bit more uncivil than not showing up for work? There is a big difference in offense conduct between theft and armed robbery, no?
He's also ordered to pay back $1.3 million in restitution. He'll probably be no more likely to repay his restitution than armed robbers though.

Which is why I keep advocating for a 30% Reduction In Force to be initiated across all government bureaucracies immediately. To avoid complying the dept head would have to demonstrated with specificity exactly what essential function would go unmanned with the cut.
Government bloat has to be stemmed.
Even if the 30% is too much and we find something necessary is going undone, it is very easy to rehire the required skill.
Lean and mean governmental = make every taxpayer funded position count.

I suggest spending some time reading "How I avoided being raped in prison" by Ben Dover
