1: Metamucil
2: Exercise
3: Decrease sat/trans fat

The evidence shows nearly every adult benefits from statins long term but I've given up trying to convince many of the "no meds ever" patients of that.

The reality is that if every American went on moderate intensity statin therapy the day they turned 40, the average lifespan would skyrocket.

As long as it's going down, tell your doctor to frick off.......seriously. A long time ago my cholesterol was too high but was dropping slowly (and naturally) and my doctor at the time wanted to put me on meds; I told her no & she got pissed......I didn't give a shite........DON'T TAKE THE MEDS UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE!!!!!!!

Statins do a lot more than just lower cholesterol. They have one of the lowest numbers needed to treat of any medication we have.

Is there a family history that might limit what gains you can make without drugs. There's nothing wrong with being on medication to get the #s in line but try to do as much as you can on your own. Cut out the beans and carrots. If you're going to eat pizza, don't eat the end crust. Eat your big meal for lunch.

These are just some things that have helped me. You're getting some other good advice in other posts too. Good luck!

An interventional cardiologist said this to me when Zocor launched, if everyone got on a low dose he would need a new job.

there is a psychology of not wasting. give it up.

don't eat it ever. stop.

you can't make up for pizza eating oats and taking metamucil.

The scientific evidence for the incredible benefit of statins is well documented in the medical literature, even in those without vascular disease and few or no risk factors:

LINK /

quote:

Reduction of LDL cholesterol with a statin reduced the risk of major vascular events (RR 0·79, 95% CI 0·77–0·81, per 1·0 mmol/L reduction), largely irrespective of age, sex, baseline LDL cholesterol or previous vascular disease, and of vascular and all-cause mortality. The proportional reduction in major vascular events was at least as big in the two lowest risk categories as in the higher risk categories

Statins lower LDL cholesterol, increase LDL particle size, decrease systemic inflammation thus decreasing rates of plaque development, etc. Most importantly for those with vascular disease, they stabilize existing plaques.

The studies show that LDL <70 is actually associated with decreases in existing plaque size. Our closest evolutionary relatives, the great apes, have LDLs of 30-50 and guess what? Heart disease is almost non-existent. Hunter gatherer societies have LDLs around 50 and they don't get strokes/heart attacks.

Seriously though, don't start on any meds anytime soon. Give it 3 months minimum, at least until you can get back into cardio. Fish oils will help some, too.

Fish oil lowers trigs and raises LDL but doesn't help LDL much.

I use fish oil, daily Metamucil and a statin. My LDL was 52, HDL was 90 and trigs 36 last I had them checked. I had moderately high cholesterol in my mid-20s and haven't changed exercise or eating habits much.

Basically go on a 1400 caloric diabetic diet.

Exercise and cut back on alcohol if you drink.

Males need to eat a hunter gather diet. Paleo does this. It has improved my health, mental thinking, and physical appearance more than any diet or exercise. And just to be clear, PD isn't a specific diet. It is more of an eating philosophy.

I'm 6'/208. 38 years old. I'm about 20 pounds above my fighting weight, but you wouldn't say I'm overweight.

Dude, I have this bad. I will eat stuff I don't even like just to not waste. I'll eat 5 days of leftovers before making something new. My wife made my son a vegan pizza from Trader Joe's that nobody likes. I'll be eating that for about the 4th straight night tonight.

I knew there had to be some psychology behind it, but wasn't sure it had a name. It's not even about saving money at all--it is this bizarre compulsion to not waste.
