With that shitty hdl you need to workout. My total cholesterol now is higher than when they tried to put me on meds. But my hdl went up significantly due to exercise so it "cancels out" so I'm told by my doc. Tchdl ratio

It sounds crazy but one drink a day may help. It can be a beer, wine, or spirit. It's the alcohol doing the work not anti-oxidants.

Trig are not VERY high, just high. The LDL is very high, and that is what the problem is. try as hard as you can...simply look on food label and don't eat it if it has much cholesterol (at all). If that doesnt work the doc will put you on meds.

heart attacks are not fun

Don't listen to your doctors advice. Get on low carb ketogenic diet. There are different schools of thought on Keto so join the "ketogenic dieters" group on Facebook. After being on this diet the LDL particles change morphology and stop being atherogenic and your triglycerides will plummet.

I'll follow up with some resources once I get off the toilet.

This is from a high carb diet. Carbs kill.

They are similar but in keto you restrict your carbs to less than 20 grams per day for most people. This will result after a period of weeks in you using your body's fat stores as your primary fuel rather than glucose. No such restriction is required in Paleo. In both you cut out grains. Basically your diet in both is quality meats, fats and lower carb vegetables. You could really change your life for the better by following one of these. I reversed prediabetic insulin resistance by eating keto.

From what I understand there is a lot of new science about cholesterol. Your body actually makes more cholesterol than you could possibly eat, I think like 80% of the cholesterol in your blood is produced by your liver.

The new thought is that some people are just more susectsble to high cholesterol diets, so say maybe your body just doesn't do a great job at regulating your internal cholesterol levels.

For your own health I'd drop at least 20lbs, not sure how muscular you are, and begin a cardio regime. Start eating more HDL foods cut back on the sugar and carbs. Eat lots of fiber.

Go back to the doctor and get your blood retested. 6 months of high cholesterol at your age won't kill you. If it's still high, go on the statins.

I was 31, 5'9" 175lbs and had high cholesterol. I cleaned up my diet and started working in a cardio routine again and I was fine the next visit.

Also fried foods have the stigma to them because everything used to be fried in lard. A lot of stuff is fried in peanut oil now, which is high in good fats. Peanut butter just gets a bad rap because most stuff on the shelf also has salt and sugar. I saw a Dutch study in which the people ate unsaturated fats instead of carbs and lowered there cholesterol. It's quite possible a fried chicken breast(with little or no breading) is better for you than a grilled chicken sandwhich on a bun.

I was able to lower mine 30 points in a week without exercise. Obviously this would not be sustainable lifestyle nor would it be recommended for long periods of time, but for a test I Knew I had in a week it was perfect:

Pills:
Fish oil
Co Q 10
Men's 1/day
Niacin no flush
Red rice yeast or something like that
Saw palmetto
Garlic supplement
Cinnamon supplement

Drink at least a gallon of water per day and nothing except natural juices.

Do not eat any meat. Including fish and no animal byproducts. As in no milk, cheese etc. Greek yogurt ok.
Do not eat any foods with saturated fats or trans fat.
Do not eat any added sugars. Natural sugar is ok.
No food with any cholesterol.
Add tons of oatmeal - steel cut oats no sugar added.

Basically you're stuck with oatmeal, fruits and veggies and water with supplements for a week.

Homemade smoothies, salads without dressing, fresh fruit and veggies, is pretty much it.

I am A country boy and was raised on bacon and eggs, so going a week without eating red meat was very difficult. I felt like crap but dropped my cholesterol 30 points which saved me 60$ a month on life insurance for the next 30 years.

For you money board folks that's 19,800 just in premiums, not counting 30 years of growth.

Take a pill. I take Simvastatin every morning (when I remember) and it knocks it right down to normal levels. No side effects at all for me. Why wouldn't you want to take a medication that easily lowers it?

When my numbers were high I saw a doctor who is a lipid specialist and he said triglycerides are directly tied to sugars. Cut down on sugars and all carbs for a while and your triglycerides should go down.

He means well. He just misuses his options in the toolkit (due to lack of time to search from his toolkit or just a small toolkit...)

Statins do have a place (albeit a small one in certain populations)

It's is hard to be the only one not worshipping at the altar of industry sponsored "scientific consensus". The current political climate on display (fake news, fact checking) gives a window into the power of group think / cognitive dissonance with the folks who annoint themselves as authorities.

Below is probably the scariest thing (if he truly believes it).

quote:

The reality is that if every American went on moderate intensity statin therapy the day they turned 40, the average lifespan would skyrocket.

frick life span, talk to me about health span

Those numbers arent devistating, but anything that reaches 200 in the LDL or TRI is considered in the bad/risk range. The HDL is good cholesterol, so you want it to be higher. Zero fried foods, red meat, limited eggs. Add oatmeal as your breakfast of choice, and since you cant go to the gym, walk as much as possible! There are lots of online resources out there for naturally lowering cholesterol.

Eat less, move a lot more, but if you are like me you are fighting your genetics.

Zetia works well for me, statins ( Crestor ) fricked up my liver , it took a year to get better.
