Same reason they refer to underwear as draws. They're coonasses.

I suspect it has something to do with the translation of English to French. There are numerous examples of such unique terms in the language.
Ever here a Cajun call a garden hose a "hose pipe"?
The expression "making groceries" (from French use of word "market") for shopping for food? And when they get home they "save" it (in a cabinet called a "safe").
Ponder these while sitting on the banquette by the neutral ground while eating beignets...

We also refer to toast as "toast bread".
It just is what it is.

b/c momma cut our pants once they got too short, and turned them into short pants. Momma ain't wasting a perfectly good pair of pants simply b/c the boy grew 3 inches over the summer but his waist is the same size.

"short pants" is the original term for shorts in regular English usage. It was just shortened over the years, and I guess the new version never caught on in La.

its simple actually. back in the day no man on the bayou wore shorts. ever. it could be 110 degrees outside and they were wearing long pants. i guess when shorts made their introduction, probably in the 60's, the elders didnt grasp the concept.
my grandfather (from boudreaux canal) never wore a pair of 'shorts' in his life. not kidding.

shite I don't know how come they say that. All I know is when me and old paw paw went to town we always made a pass by Nonc MaMan to talk at him and Ta-Taunt. My old pawpaw he always made fun of Ta-Taunt because she had her draws hanging on the clothes line. One time he gave me a dollar to go wet down all of Ta-Taunts draws with the hose pipe and save them in the deep freeze on top the ice box to make them stiff.
