Phillip Montgomery, long time OC for Art Briles, left Baylor two years ago to be head coach at Tulsa. He hired Gilbert away from Bowling Green to be his OC at Tulsa. Glibert had been a first year OC under Dino Babers at BG.

Fast forward to last year, when Charlie Strong needed a new OC. It can be debated whether Gilbert was Strong's first choice or second (the other candidate being TCU co-OC Sonny Cumbie)...you can read a little about UT's coaching search here, which contains good info on Gilbert and Cumbie):

LINK

Anyhow, Gilbert got the job and Texas ended up with the 19th best offense in the country this season with a true freshman QB and a 2,000 yard running back.

From the link above:
quote:

Gilbert is from the Art Briles coaching tree from his brief time in Houston with Briles and his current time with Tulsa head coach and former Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery.

quote:

Gilbert most notably developed Jimmy Garoppolo, who is much more of a pocket-passer.

From a UT buddy:
quote:

He will only get better. He had on and off play calling days and his offense is very qb dependent. His ideal guy is a throw first that can run some. He also is big on having 1 wr who is a speed first guy that can stretch the field vertically every play. FYI the oline coach and him are attached at the hip

He is from Texas and played QB at San Angelo St...here is his wiki page:

Coaching career
2003 Springtown (TX) HS (RB)
2004 Springtown (TX) HS (QB)
2005 Houston (GA)
2006–2007 Cooper (TX) HS (OC/QB)
2008–2010 Lake View (TX) HS
2011 Temple (TX) HS (OC/QB)
2012–2013 Eastern Illinois (OC/QB)
2014 Bowling Green (OC/QB)
2015 Tulsa (OC/QB)
2016–present Texas (OC/QB)

He has moved around a lot lately and is probably looking for some stability...

he can come here and be our coordinator, we have an opening, he'll have full reigns on all things offense.

Girlbert did a great job. That would be a pretty big hire in my opinion

Seems like Gilbert fits the profile for what Coach O wants to do. Proven power spread OC/QB Coach (Briles coaching tree) with Texas recruiting ties. Did a really good job in first season at Texas. Available now. Fairly likely to stay around a while.

You seem much more engaged this year in the coaching corousel. Is it just because you have so many ties to and are right in the middle of the LSU, Houston, and UT gigs or are you trying to earn your media passes and dip your toe into the shallow waters of journalism. Either way, this board has saved a lot of us from the horror that is the Rant this season.

I agree chicken Gilbert would be a great hire, but makes to much sense and logical choice for LSU. I do not want Kiffin or Sark

Good god coach O is a fricking moron

So many great OCs out there and he's twiddling his thumbs waiting for his bff who may not even come or will be gone after 1 season at best

meanwhile Saban is going to scoop up the best OC available, while O ends up settling with a rehab patient for OC

Count me in. Gilbert, Canada, or Heilfrich and I am happy.

I will fricking melt if it is Kiffin though.

What worries me is Coach O has all his eggs in the Kiffin basket. He is missing out on some golden opportunities to grab a good coordinator. It wouldn't surprise me to see Saban slip in and hire Gilbert while O is waiting on his pal to come over. I dont think Kiffin will come here in the end and if he does, it will only be for a year. That will end up hurting us in recruiting. I say strike while the iron is hot and hire Gilbert. Lock up two solid coordinators for a few years and call it a day!

I am OK with Gilbert, but his offense trailed on at the end of the year, and the way he would put in his "18 Wheeler Package" in odd situations did not make sense. I personally think that Helfrich is the home-run hire.

So, he's only 5 years removed from being a highschool coach?

Isn't that supposed to be evidence that he can't compete at the college level?

At least that's what I've been reading on tRant...

he has one year as a GA under Briles and one year under his former OC. to say thats from the Briles tree is a pretty serious reach.

its not a good sign if you to go this far to find a compliment.
