I'm so confused at what narrative I'm supposed to get riled up over. Do I go apeshit when he does something unusual or unprecedented like this, or do I go apeshit when he does something like a typical politician because he "tricked" me into thinking he'd be different than the establishment?

This actually had more to do with Taiwan leadership not wanting to provoke China. Until the past 3 years or so, the Taiwan public had a very conservative approach to dealing with China - basically it was a fear of poking the sleeping bear.

In 2013, there were massive protests in Taipei because the president at that time made statements indicating a willingness to talk to China and strengthen the bond between the two countries. The new president ran on a platform of re-establishing true Taiwan independence.

I was in Taipei during some of the protests... It was very organized and non-violent. But the crowds were impressive. The Taiwan people are ready to separate from the one-China policy. The phone call to Trump simply puts the world on notice.
