It would also take neighborhood and, quite frankly, racial profiling. But it'll never happen.

Banning, or at least limiting, Section 8 would go a long way. Hano and Hud are what's creating and expanding these problems.

I think it's just part of the new Orleans "blasé" mentality. The white collar folk see it as a "other side of the tracks" issue and something that even though is prevalent, it doesn't really affect them or their personal lives.

They live in Jefferson or other parishes, but I know what you mean.

It's always boggled my mind how middle and upper class folks there love to talk politics, but they're so casual about expectations or standards. They like their politicians to be colorful and representative of local pride (helps to have a good name), someone they can mingle with at parties. But they're sending their kids to private schools and avoiding much of the city unless they're going out to eat, so I guess they just take the overall situation for granted.

I remember when I was a kid and everyone talked about having a District Attorney who played piano and sang in the Quarter. I was too young to have any idea whether he did a good job as DA, I just remember thinking it was kind of weird that his piano playing and flair was what they cared about.

You missed out on the late 80s and early 90s brah. Most people just stopped watching the news because they got tired of the first 10 minutes of every broadcast being about a bunch of dead people

Now it's to the point it does not matter where you are at, what time it is, or what race you are. Anyone is suceptable to violence. Black on Black, White on Black, Black on White, Hell White on White.

ETA: Well maybe I laughed too soon, just catching up on the days events. Oops. I mean we need to hear the whole story but if you believe the witness maybe the whitey was at fault.

Responsible parenting from both parents, those who don't have good role models in their home need to have other adults from their community step up and give them the guidance needed. The problem will never cease until people in each community volunteer to guide these kids to a better outlook on life.

Do we really want to compare ourselves to Baltimore and Memphis? Hell, Memphis's murder rate is half of Nola's despite similar demographics. NYC's murder rate is a 10th of ours and Chicago a 3rd. New Orleans has a murder problem and a populace that's given up and accepted the violence as a part of everyday life in Nola.

Once proud ?

Lots of proud folks in New Orleans.

Violence on the news ?

Has been like that my entire life. In fact that's what the news does. They report violence, it happens in Houston too. They just have better looking reporters.

Rebuilt the mental health sector that was dismantled by bobby Jindal

That would be a very good start

Republican leadership.

Stop and frisk.

Less gun control, more punishment for illegal firearms.

Less welfare state.

When everyone that knights for it on the OT actually put action behind the words they type on a message board, get involved in the actual governing and policing of their own city instead of being flippant about it, defensive about it or oblivious about it the old girl has a chance. And I surely wish they would because I love the place.

Until then nothing will happen. Complacency isn't a virtue.

What it really takes is giving up the ideology of "all life is precious", the thugs have obviously already. Go back about 200 years to a more succinct justice system of on the spot executions. Forget the notion of 3 strikes, make it one and done.

Gotta take out the trash to be rid of the trash.

From a sociological/psychological standpoint: take out the profit motive. In some way the perps are receiving some kind of profit: emotional, social, financial. Gotta change the entire dynamics of crime such that the cost/benefit analysis that occurs at the base level in us all, makes it it obvious that crime will not pay. While the civilized of us do this everyday, choosing to watch a TV show over beating our neighbor for instance, the thugs find violence as a more profitable choice for activities.

People are just numb to it. My wife knows how fricked up it is there and she still wants to move there because it has culture and there is always something to do.

What will it take to be a tipping point to start the change. Will it take a large group of white people to get gunned down it the French Quarter or Garden district at 4:30pm. Until it starts to affect the middle upper class white people it will be same ole same ole.

That mentality and reality is the problem. Why is it that the white man always has to solve the problems?

That is fine. Being said, don't act all shocked and appalled when bad stuff comes to your front door
