Why anyone is still against the legalization of marijuana is beyond me

"It's been 45 years since the war on drugs was declared and it hasn't been a success," lead author Tess Borden of the Human Rights Watch said in an interview. "Rates of drug use are not down. Drug dependency has not stopped. Every 25 seconds we're arresting someone for drug use."

In Texas, for instance, 116 people are currently serving life sentences on charges of simple drug possession. Seven of those people earned their sentences for possessing quantities of drugs weighing between 1 gram and 4 grams, or less than a typical sugar packet. That's because Texas also has a habitual offender law, allowing prosecutors to seek longer-than-normal sentences for people who have two prior felonies.
"In 2015, more than 78 percent of people sentenced to incarceration for felony drug possession in Texas possessed under a gram," the report found.

Blame the law makers, not the police (not saying you are).

Because our prison system is more interested in making money than preventing crime.

At least be honest about this, dude.
No one is serving life simply because they got caught with a joint.

So because "everybody's doing it" we should change the laws to accommodate the criminals? Lol that's just stupid.

If we are going to legalize anything it should be cocaine!
Our population is fat and lazy, blow will and can fix all of that.

There is a way not to be a habitual offender....quit breaking the fricking law. I have no sympathy for anyone that gets hit with being a habitual offender

In fact, police make more arrests for marijuana possession alone than for all violent crimes combined.
This makes plenty of sense. Violent crime is on the decline.
This whole article is very poorly written.

I mean it's not like the criminals make it all that hard to catch them when they walk down the street and drive around without even trying to mask the smell of the MJ.

I was in court in Collin County Texas (North DFW) last week and every other case they called was possession under two ounces.
Seemed like a huge waste of the courts time to me.

Been saying for years that marijuana legalization is the economic boom we need to stave off the second housing crisis and the student loan bubble along with the evaporation of manufacturing.
