Yeah kinda strange and disappointing for me. Same for sending iPhone to no allo iPhone. Different 5 digit number on the two different devices too.

Very disappointing to not have full SMS integration. Does Google even listen to what it's consumers want. Anyone who is interested in chat apps probably already has a preferred one.
Just give us an all in one chat app and a damn gboard.

There is, but if you text an iphone it sends them a spam link to download allo from a 5 digit number and then sends your message.
Also, can't set it as default messaging app so if anyone tries to text you it will go to your normal messaging app and not allo

It isn't fixed if you just use a google voice number either. So it doesn't appear to be an iMessage issue as my google voice number isn't tied to iMessage. It goes to my hangouts rather than Allo.

I downloaded it... There's not much to it. Looks like a texting app, but it's not..
So it's basically a re-skinned Hangouts, but without the video calling?

I wonder if some Google developer is dissatisfied with Allo so he leaked it to the masses to force Google to make some changes..

Hopefully otherwise they have Hangouts, Messenger, Allo... They are all different. Allo can't replace Hangouts and can't really replace Messenger without spamming.

People really are expecting too much out of Google. Do they have a lot of resources? Yes. Is their goal to satisfy consumer needs? No. Their goal is find new ways to monetize you. You are their product. Look at GBoard. There is a reason it exists on iPhone and not Android. It was built to create a new vector to profile iPhone users. It may come to Android eventually, but the product didn't get where it is today because the goal was to make a good keyboard. The goal was to get user data, the ends to do that was with a good keyboard.
Allo appearing to be half assed is no doubt linked to the same mentality. The goal wasn't to make the end all be all of messaging clients, the goal probably was to try to break into the space of these 3rd party messaging apps that hide user data behind encrypted messages. If it looks like it's a Me Too app that's because it was created to be a Me Too app.

They would be hard pressed to keep the average Android user if they kept making this kind of stuff and not delivering when Apple has been doing it for awhile. It's basically "Why would I switch to Android when this already works?" Google needs to come up with something that is an all in one so things get simpler.
I also don't get why they are putting apps on Iphones. If I was on Apple and was happy with the ecosystem and Google brought over all their cool stuff, why in the hell would I switch? I would get everything cool that I needed.
