"You look at HS football in Louisiana, Mississippi, and East Texas, the top programs are always graduating guys that could be Danny Etling 3-4 years from now."

In one sense I agree with you, but something has happened over the past 20 or so years that makes this more difficult, at least for a team that runs a pro-style offense with a QB often operating under center. Louisiana high schools (and perhaps East Texas and Miss., as well) have largely abandoned traditional attacks, placing their best athlete at QB in a shotgun-based system. At least for the type of QB we want, pickings have been slimmer in La. in recent years.

No

JJ was a pocket passer who was asked to run. The fact that he was asked to run doesn't change what he was.

LA doesn't produce many pro-style QB's compared to other positions, sure, but the Houston and Dallas areas produce a ton of them.

And it's not like LA doesn't produce any at all. Between the 2013-2016 classes, there haven't been any 4 or 5 star pro-style QB's from LA, but there have been 11 3-stars. It seems like one or two of those should have been able to pan out. Just as an example, the kid from Jesuit back in 2013 was pretty good for Tulane and has transferred to Nebraska. He'll be eligible in 2017. Here are his senior year highlights. Isn't this the type of QB we need for our system? LINK

Evangel and West Monroe both have 3-star pro-style senior QB's this year. Again, not saying either one is the answer, but you have to start somewhere in recruiting the type of QB that can fit into our system.

His wikipedia page said he was a Rivals 4 star FWIW 3 star on scout

And was listed as a pro style qb. Too many people equate being black as a dual threat.

Nothing to do with being black it's because his running was an effective part of his game.

He was bigger, faster, braver than BH and he had a really good arm. He was always at the top of the list at the Manning camp.

BUT.. he was always stuck in the 2-receiver system, he NEVER had a dedicated QB coach. On 1-9 he was asked to win the game pretty much on his own...only about 7 plays were called to throw the ball downfield (which he did fairly effectively).

One of the laughable things I read from the ranters who think JL was the answer is this... Lee's career record against Alabama was 1-TD, 8-INTs. He would have been slaughtered under the Alabama rush.

We need pocket passers who can scramble instead of this dual threat crap.

Wasn't Mett a similar situation? Not sure

Sure... at UGA where they actually can develop a QB. No way Mett was the player he was if he started off at LSU.

And some of you didnt want Leonard Scott.

Thats because our "dual threats" are actually no threat at all.

Dual threat literally means the QB is a legitimate option to either throw the ball or run the ball. It doesn't mean he has to be speedy enough to run the spread option. Davey, Russell, Lee, and Mett were pro style pocket passers. JJ was definitely a dual threat. You don't score on an 80 yard TD off an option keeper like he did against Tennessee in 2010 if you aren't a threat to run the ball. And that's just one example of JJ being a dual threat QB.

Why would any good QB come to Lsu? Les has a run team no matter what. QB's could not show his wears! It will not improve until Les is gone. The time has come!!!!

Les can't get a star player that fits in his system. He lives a different world. We can't expect him to have the foresight to get a DE type as a back up all the time.

Then go to Florida. Almost all of the offenses are running offenses.

N'ah. Carr was in Sugarland, Texas for a cup of tea, but ended HS in California. Never came to LA.

So, that's one three-star/year and you would presumably want a hotshot four or five as well. That means seven or eight scholarship quarterbacks on the roster if they all stay four years and six or so even if the hotshots leave after three. If you're going to carry that many, then what other positions do you scale back on?
