What the hell? There's a trade deadline for unsigned drafted players?

yes.

As first explained last week by PFT, the window for trading Bosa closed at 4:00 p.m. ET today, 30 days before the start of the regular season. He can’t be traded until the 2017 league year opens, at the earliest.

Straight from Pro Football Talk. Deadline was August 9th.

Bosa wants paid by the end of the calendar year, and the Chargers want to wait until the new league fiscal year starts in March.

Three months and the offset language seems strange things to draw a line in the sand about when your career hasn't even started. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

This is something I'll never understand. I realize he wants to be paid what he thinks he's worth, and it's not guaranteed in the NFL, but Jesus. We are talking about money that will be a rounding error to him in the long run if he just manages his money properly.

For his Agent, I'm sure it is about the principle of the matter.

Worst part to me..Hes stated that hes willing to accept one or the other.. No off set or all Guaranteed money this year.. The Charges refuse to budge even when its a small amount next calendar year they are proposing. Bosa seems to be making a stand on principal that is congruent with precedence.. Good for him

It is guaranteed. Dude just wants to get all the bonus now and not in March
The offset just tells everyone he is prepping to be a bust

chargers should have traded the pick instead of trying to rewrite the rules.

They are a shitty and classless organization. They sent a freakin mascot to a city meeting on a stadium

So can someone tell me how far off I am on this...

Bosa is offered slotted money, but the Chargers are saying we want to give you all of it but in installments instead of a lump sum. Bosa counters with that is not how the rest of the picks at my slot have been done and that is not what we want.

Do the Chargers have a history of doing installments before this year? Or is this a first time thing?

Chargers have been in the wrong on this one
it's august 24th, if the chargers were bullshitting with this guy they'd have caved by now

no one is in the wrong. they don't have a bargaining zone and by all appearances it seems to be on the agent of bosa. that they publicly pulled the offer speaks volumes.

Part of me wonders if the NFLPA isn't using him as a litmus test for dealing with offset/deferments in the future.

Do you think Smith would be that crazy to gamble on something like that?

I am not sure what Smith has done lately to make him keep in good graces with the NFL Players. He is light years ahead of Upshaw, but in every case where Smith has thought he had the owners they have taken him to the woodshed.

players listen to and trust their agents, but if you're dumb enough to trust someone who tells you missing the season is in your best interests...

bottom line is the teams have the leverage, maybe he's that good. word gets around if the chargers are fricking this guy, he won't suffer for it next year...if his agent is lighting the table on fire, no team will take him in the first round.

Or that he wants the same clause a lot of rookies taken around his draft spot are getting. Goff and Ramsey must be planning on prepping to be a bust too.

The ridiculous thing is that the guaranteed money is just that, GUARANTEED MONEY. Whether you get it tomorrow or a few months from now, they can't back out of it.

Lane kiffin was a coach in the NFL so I never doubt the potential for an obscenely incompetent front office, and I don't know anything about the negotiation

All I know is what date it is, and how desperate these front office guys want to win (because if they don't, they're out of work) and then they publicly pulled the offer...yikes.

A lot but not all. Bosa knew the chargers dont budge on this. So hes bitchin about not getting the full bonus by Dec and not March
Nick Hardwick says the players all think Bosa is weak and shouldnt be concerned about offset cause he will get extended before year 5 if hes good. So Bosas mindset says he thinks he wont be good

Pick one or the other. Football is a pretty physical game.

5th year is an option for the chargers actually, so they would have the leverage then too if he does play well.

Not like injuries happen in football though.
