What character issues while at LSU? If anyone had half a clue as to how he grew up, you'd know it's a small miracle he didn't end up in jail or dead. I may not believe what he believes but that doesn't overshadow being one of the all time greats.
YAY
YAY

quote:. Not at all. On the court he was greatest scorer and playmaker I ever seen wear the purple and gold. I loved watching him, he was incredible. That crossover pullback for a 3 was deadly and nearly unstoppable. Like I said the flag thing is bad enough but what I can't forgive is his post 9/11 remarks. He may not say them things anymore but he hasn't made it right and apologized either.
OK this does HURT.... But damn should we just forget what he did here based on this??????

Anybody here want to be that LSU bows down and is PC. Rauf never played a minute in an LSU uniform.

I could support that...he left his home state to come to LSU where he became the most exciting player I have ever seen play at the PeteMac...

Some people here are so petty. Put me in the "yay" camp. I don't care about his non violent protests from 20 years ago.

yay. still like the guy and in articles i've read about him, he's pretty devout in his beliefs even if they go against everything i believe
This is what America is about. He's not a wife beater, doesn't promote violence, doesn't commit crimes, and has probably contributed more in tax $$ than most on this board ever will.

Going out of his way to say there was no way muslims did this.
Context. Be said they weren't true muslims, as he does not relate his version of Islam with theirs. He is a non violent person.

Isn't Augustus' jersey already retired? If it comes down to Jackson and Fowles, I think as exciting as Jackson was, he didn't finish four years at LSU and, if I'm correct he didn't win SEC or Nat'l POY awards while here. So Fowles, would get the nod over him for me. She's got four final fours, 3 SEC championships, and an SEC POY award. Does Jackson even qualify since he didn't graduate?

With all due respect, I can't seriously compare the excitement of watching Chris Jackson versus Fowles.

He is the greatest high school basketball player I have ever seen. He was the most exciting college basketball player I have ever seen. He absolutely deserves to have his jersey retired.

"Excitement"? That's what qualifies people for getting their jersey retired? I thought it was about accomplishments?

It's 36 Yay; 16 Nay
I would like to point out that if this pool was taken 10 years ago on this board, I fairly certain that these results would be flipped.

Yay, obviously.
CJ is the best pure basketball player I've seen at LSU in my lifetime and I'm 46.
Regardless of any of the other stuff, the guy was beyond a class act while at LSU and his play on the court more than deserves this honor.
Big yes...and an added, it's about fricking time.

Probably...but that's most because people are generally reactionary assholes.
There was NEVER at time at which I'd have ever said anything other than YES to this honor. The only thing EVER which should have kept his jersey from the rafters was the requirement to have earned his degree... That other bullshite...no.
We're not talking about Cecil Collins here. People forget, or have decided to pretend they don;t know this, but Rauf had been silently doing other things during the anthem for several weeks before some local news reporter noticed it and made it a story. No one had been outraged, he hadn't made some big show...he simply decided he wanted to do something else and did it without any fanfare. It had never been about the show. NO ONE EVEN NOTICED HIM!! It was only when the story became big and he had to defend himself that he was forced to explain and THEN it became a show. After that, the guy was basically drummed out of the league and mercilessly harassed. Dude had his fricking HOUSE burned down... After that, I'd be pretty fricking angry as well...but he wasn't supposed to be?
All I'd ever ask is that you remember the kid that was at LSU. He was devout then, but it was the "preferred" kind so people were cool with it. He's devout now, but the "bad" kind. In between, he took a VERY minor and incredibly benign stand and only made a big deal out of it when forced to...and the guy believed his actions were just so much he stood by them and allowed it to ruin his career. Had to find an athlete willing to sacrifice everything for their beliefs, and even if I don't agree with them I respect the hell out of him for doing so.

I'm on the fence about it. But if LSU is going to retire another basketball number, it's hard to say anyone is MORE deserving than Jackson/Abdul-Raouf.
Still to this day the most exciting player I've had the chance to watch live. He was incredible at LSU
