When will NBA structure league more like NFL

I know the players are running the NBA and these salaries are what the NFL wants to but the Pelicans like many other teams will never compete under this structure, Davis will be gone when his contract his up.

The NBA players have a ton of leverage, but their lockout/strike ability is very poor because of the lifestyles of their players. The good news is they have a new executive director. The problem may still be that they can't withstand a strike/lockout for any meaningful amount of time to put a pain point on the owners.
All that being said, the owners will likely never break the union to NFL type cost certainty unless they are willing to lose an entire season.

You want a franchise tag? Nba players association will never allow this. What you probably don't understand is how much of a dumpster fire the nflpa is.

NBA players make more money that NFL players both on and off the court.
They have fully guaranteed contracts.
Why would the players want to be more like the NFL?

When the NFL plays 5 on 5 and 2-3 guys can sway the balance of the league

I would love to see the Venn diagram of people who complain about competition in 2016 and also love 80s NBA.
Or fans who love Shaq yet think Durant is the ultimate bitch for bailing on his team.

People are stupid. If OKC weren't cheap, still had Harden and they had developed into a dynasty, KD choosing to stay with that dynasty wouldn't be looked at as a bitch move. They wouldn't feel he should sign with a lesser team to prove himself as a player.

After what KD just did there will be a lock out. The new CBA was created to prevent this from happening and spread out the talent and it failed horribly

Never. The NBA owners had all the leverage in the last round of negotations and they could not get a salary cap system like the NHL or NFL, and in the next labor stoppage the players will probably have the leverage.

Oh yeah, San Antonio and Cleveland are just marketing hot spots. Players go to teams that can and will do whatever it takes to win.

Good thing we have like 4 years to build a contender around, and if the pels are too incompetent to build a contender around AD23 then he should leave.

they're not. the NBA bent them over in the last CBA

impossible, b/c of revenue and # of players
both leagues split it right at 50/50. the NBA just has fewer players

maybe. maybe not. the NBA has done a ton to incentivize teams keeping players

what, exactly?
you think the NBA is going to attack free agency?

the owners, as a whole, don't want a hard cap
that's a non-starter and everyone knows it

My god.
The CBA had nothing to do with Curry having bad ankles, signing below market value, then exploding into maybe the best offensive player ever
The CBA had nothing to do with Draymond Green becoming the prototype modern big in 2016. Or with David Lee getting hurt to allow him to actually play
The CBA had nothing to do with an unforeseen, massive influx of TV money coming into the league and allowing GS to keep their top 4 players and add a future HOF player under 30
The CBA had nothing to do with moronic hot takes about choking and ringZzz
Now, if you want to argue max contracts are bad/dumb, go right ahead. Durant didnt take a discount, from what I have seen, to sign in GS. They have the money for many reasons beyond the CBA, but an artificial max certainly made it more possible.
A hard cap would be the dumbest and most short-sighted thing owners could do. The (fear of) the luxury tax screwed small market OKC from keeping their core. A hard cap would be more of the same for all teams. Cutting your nose to spite your face

Not one that costs games, the league has too much momentum to have a work stoppage. Teams are making more money than ever, players are making more money than ever, it's not in anyone's interest to lose games and momentum by having a Billionaires vs Millionaires fight that the fans always hate.
What the league should do is give the players back some money, maybe just .5% or 1% max, and in exchange they get all the structural changes they want, age rules, franchise tag, etc. CP3 and LeBron may be running the union right now, but I don't think they can take a stand against rules that serve the 1% and cost the 99% actual money. Divide and conquer.

IIRC there were multiple NBA owners also own an NHL team or are involved in the ownership of the NHL teams, and they wanted it a system like the NHL. The NBA only owners did not want, and obviously the did not want side won out which is why I said never.

Thats the point, Max contract made it easier to create these team. With superstars having a cap on how much they can make it doesn't allow them on missed out money, along with the tax penalty. Teams in LA, NY, and SF will pay tax due to more income while we would probably never pay tax.

The reason the NBA is not as competitive as the NFL is the playoff structure. If the NFL had say a best of 3 series, Eli would have zero SBs.
Also the injury factor. What happened to the Cavs last season is not the norm. In fact, the only other time I can remember an injury completely changing a Finals is the year Magic pulled his hamstring against Detroit in 89. I think Scott was also hurt.
In the NFL, injuries, even to non stars, can completely change the outcome and they are way more frequent.
Ultimately, even with the NFL QB premium, it's still easier to build a championship team than in the NBA.

And yet NBA will break ratings and attendance records this year. It's a compelling narrative and as much as th 73 win Warriors generated interest this year, next year is going to be even more over the top after losing to Lebron and signing KD. People will either love them or hate them, but everybody is going to watch.

Actually it absolutely did on this point. The players union fought the owners to not allow cap smoothing with regards to the estimated influx in cash from the upcoming renegotiated TV contracts so that the rise in the cap could not be distributed more evenly over time. Something the owners wanted but didn't fight as hard as they probably should in retrospect.
Which is why we are seeing what we are seeing this offseason with a massive spike that has allowed the whole Kevin Durant thing to be possible the way it is in the first place.
