my family is looking to buy a camp... we are trying to decide between grand isle and cocodrie. found camps in our price range in both areas (one in cocodrie on the water; one in grand isle off the water..same price). we have fished both a few times with friends but will have to learn either area equally... grew up fishing myrtle grove and hopedale. own a 19 ft bay boat and 16 ft aluminum boat... Any advice on which area to buy?

Bay St. Louis

You'll save $100,000, be on the water, have actual things to do, and still be able to fish in Louisiana.

If you're in Kenner, it's closer.

Plenty of LA people around.

My family did this about 6 years ago- after putting in offers in Cocodrie and GI. It was a good move if you have kids.

Where is the best place to look for camps and/or land for sale down there? Anybody have any experiences with the camp search or building? Appreciated!

There are a few places for sale in Southern Comfort in Dulac.

I would check real estate express houma.
Also would be a good idea to just ride down all the side streets as there have been quite a few for sale by owner signs lately.

Lots more activities in Grand Isle for the family. Cocodrie is pretty much only fishing

I would steer clear of cocodrie. No fish. I have camp there, but I only use it to bird watch.

Grand isle is more social, cocodrie is more fishing. ( Could be compared to the Venice area.)

There fish in both places though. Arty's is a big selling point as well.

For inshore fishing Coco is the answer.

We have a camp in Grand Isle. It was a compromise. I wanted to be in Venice or Cocodrie. Wife and kids wanted the beach. Worked out well for us. We been on the island 5 years now and have learned the area and can catch fish. Lots to do on the island. Good luck. BTW our camp is for sale. Need a bigger place.

The beach and a few bars is pretty much the only thing GI has to offer over Coco. I'm a big fan of porch drinking so there's no need for that to me. Coco is much better fishing throughout the year and a little bit shorter drive with close proximity to Houma.

I'm all about the camp drinking. I don't do the bar stuff. Grand Isle also has a ton more dining options, its got the wakeboard park, sno ball stand, ice cream/dope truck, more area to tube and ski and often live entertainment at marinas for rodeos and stuff.

In cocodrie they are building a new corp of engineers levee and flood control system (just a little north of cocodrie) which you can get a camp within it. Or even a little closer up towards Chauvin is the older, already existing flood control system, which is maybe 10 miles north of Cocodrie. That might be a consideration or maybe not.
