was noted via John Gruber’s interview with Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi, that iMessage, at peak times, sees 200,000 messages being sent per second. Looking from the outside, it would seem that it would be in Apple’s best interest to keep such a popular service locked down to its own ecosystem. But if Apple truly plans to open up iMessage beyond its own walls, then it probably has a fairly compelling reason for doing so. It’s a reason that we’ll likely learn more about next week.
It's so they can break it out on the balance sheet and show it as an area of growth.

Sounds like it. They're just squeezing one more ounce of usefulness out of an obsolete service. Well, I shouldn't say obsolete, since it made SMS as we know it obsolete. But it's now just another messaging service that has nothing unique about it as far as I know. When iMessage was first released, texting plans were still a thing, and the seamless integration of iMessage with SMS made it extremely valuable. Does it serve any real purpose anymore?

Absolutely. I can text while on an airplane. That's invaluable to me.
I'm sure there are 3rd party apps to do this but who cares? I don't want a 3rd party app that keeps two text logs.

Yeah this is pretty weird and pointless.

This is my question. What is the difference? Now a days, everyone seems to have unlimited talk text and it's all about data usage.
What's the point of imessage over sms

How about the fairly regular threads about Apple and Android users having problems texting each other, especially in a group text setting. There have been some posters here that switched to iPhone because of the issue.

just another messaging service
More like the default messaging service on a pretty big platform. I also have to think if they are doing this they plan to monetize it, and since they've taken the "we don't spy on you" stance, I'd have to think the monetization will come from value added. Probably selling emoji packages, but maybe something innovative like buying stuff via messaging like they do in some of the Asian messaging apps.

For one, imessage encrypts the data and regular texting is unsecured.

Doesn't I message show you when the recipient reads your message?

It can. You set whether or not you want to have read receipts on. I would say less than 25% of people I've texted have it on. And it's not necessarily when they actually read it, it's only when they open up the message.
I probably could have explained that better, but I'm still on my first cup of coffee.

It does unless the person you're texting turns off read receipts.

End to end encryption
Full res photos
Lossless (uncompressed) video
Dependability (1-2x a month I won't get several hours worth of group sms texts)
Location Sharing
Voice memos
The ability to leave group texts

Lol bitching for years about issues with this, they finally fix it and everyone goes meh. Hilarious

not only goes meh, but act like there is no point at all. Like WhatsApp wasn't bought for $19 billion and predicted to be worth over $100 billion in a few years. Like Facebook Messenger isn't said to be worth MORE than WhatsApp. Like LINE isn't valued in the billions. Right now iMessage is only worth platform lock-in even though it has more daily users than both WhatsApp and LINE.
If an Apple user asked "what's the point?" of Allo in the Google I/O thread, they would have been ridiculed for being a stupid sheep (even though Google already has 4 other messaging services).
ETA: I just went and looked at the /r/android thread on this topic. It definitely cleansed my pallet of the stupid in this thread.

They might expand Apple Pay and take on PayPal's Venmo.

This is my question. What is the difference between Apple Pay and using a card? Now a days, everyone seems to have credit cards and debit cards in their wallets.

I'm all android/google
But if getting this means my friends stop bitching about me fricking up the grouptexts, i'll probably do it

It's good for me b/c I like to carry a money clip wallet but I also like to play the credit card game. I can't fit all my CC's in my money clip so this allows me to still be able to use whichever one I choose.
