Even if he never returned a single punt in his career, he might be the best gunner we've ever had on punts.

Mathieu was a football player. He could run, cover, tackle, hit, catch, run and be elusive with the ball in his hands, and was and still is the most instinctive and smartest player on the field. Adams might be a better Safety in the mold of a safety.

I think (hope-?) that's what Schlabach was thinking when he wrote this. More prototypical, and therefore "better", at filling a traditional Safety role, maybe, but give me a diverse, all around ball player and playmaker like TM anytime.

Don't care if he doesn't fit "the mold"; dude was a total beast.

laughable statement. and pretty ignorant.

mathieu had the greatest single season in lsu history, and was the best player in the country by a fricking mile in 2011. it wasn't even remotely close.

TM has the intangibles that many players don't. The kid just makes plays but he isn't the fastest, quickest, biggest, or strongest.

TM was the greatest defensive player in college football history. Certainly the best to ever play for LSU.

What? Adams is a badass but The Badger is a legend. That comparison does no one any good.

Jamal may prove to be a better pro in time, but TM7 was arguably the greatest collegiate defender of all time.

So, he spoke for Adams in making the bold statement?

Mathieu might be the most talented player to ever put on the purple and gold.

Mathieu was fabulous! He was NOT the best player to ever play for LSU. Two of his teammates were better than him. Patrick Peterson, his LSU teammate, and Leonard Fournette, his St Aug teammate.

Mathieu was the most peculiar player to ever play at LSU - and he was one of the greatest. The only guy I've ever seen play like Mathieu is the Steelers' Polamalu. But Peterson dominated every game he played. He and Fournette are the most talented Tigers of all time.

I would not do the disservice to Mathieu or Adams by comparing the two. They never played the same position in college. Adams is a better Eric Reid.

I also credit chavis a lot for Mathieu, not many coaches would have seen his talent and see how it translates to the field. He was the perfect fit for the mustang package.

Adams has potential to maybe a better Reid. I know Reid had Mathieu, Claiborne, and Simon on his team to help him out, but by God-Reid was a pro-bowler as rookie!

comparing just on the defensive side, does he finish with a better year than Mathieu's last?

Are you joking? TM7 was one of the best big play defensive players in cfb history.
In 2011 he led the sec in forced amd recovered fumbles.
The 11 career forced fumbles ranks as the seventh-highest total in NCAA history and is tied with Guss Scott of Florida for the SEC record.
In the seccg he became just the second player to return a punt for a TD in the game’s history and the first defensive player to win the MVP award since 1994.

I think Adams will have a great season but we may never see a player like TM7 again at lsu. He was a generational talent and playmaker.

I love me some Adams. But in 30 years of watching football, Tyrann was one of the greatest I've seen in cleats...at any level. It practically wasn't fair.

Yet after we all witnessed those accomplishments, many said it would never translate to the next level (like many stupid pro scouts) and he couldnt cover anyone.
