looking to upgrade the good ol' 50" LED Hisense that my son made a black spot in the center of the screen when he threw a plastic hammer.
trying to stay under $500 and 55" + 4K with ROKU built into it is kind of compelling.
TCL/SOL/OMG whatever is not compelling.

It is not going to be a fantastic picture. However, I have a TCL Roku 32" in my gym and it's perfect for that role - an auxiliary, "cable-less" TV with exactly 1 remote to keep track of and built in Roku functionality.
Having had one, I would recommend it without hesitation for an auxiliary display.
FWIW - if this is TCL, that's the bestselling brand in China, baw, and their new partner is Hisense - so, you're kind of going with what you know. I'm 99% certain your old Hisense panels comparable to those in the new Roku TVs, regardless of brand, and probably a little better as the technology improves.
So, you already kind of know what you're getting. If it works for the budget, I say go for it.

I've bought a number of shite brand TVs, with generally good luck. One was a TCL I think, but I don't know where it is in the house. They're all shite TVs that nobody complains about, so none really stick out.
I don't have expectations that a 55 inch 500 dollar 4k TV is going to be superb, or that it'll last 10 years, but I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm certain the sound will be terrible, but you knew that.
The only TVs I've had fail are a Sammy DLP after several years, and a Vizio refurb. All my Hisense/TCL types just get relegated to another room or the patio or or something. The only problem with these larger disposable televisions is that when you want to upgrade, it's not that easy to find a new place for a 55 inch TV.

I agree with this - my gym Roku would get an overall B+ if the sound was better.

We have a couple TCL Roku TVs. We like them. As mentioned, you aren't going to get the absolute best picture but it is good enough for us. We like the Roku integration.
I am interested in the 4K sets as well.

Do it.
All TV screens are made by one of 5 companies. As was said TCL, Hisense, and Changhong are all basically the same company. They are 1 of the 5 who makes their own screens, and are the #1 brand in China.

As long as you know for 4K it's already outdated significantly. So if just wanting a last gen set on the cheap knowing that, you'll be fine.
Posted on 6/6/16 at 6:35 pm to UltimateHog
Why is it outdated? What's new in the 4k world?
Posted on 6/6/16 at 7:02 pm to CAD703X
HDR1000 and Dolby Vision.
If your TV doesn't support the new 4K formats, it's already outdated.
Are you not familiar at all with the next gen formats for 4K TV's? High Dynamic Resolution and Dolby's own version called Dolby Vision.
I know you know what HDR is for still images, but the technology is now in TV's and not just for images anymore and it makes a DRASTIC difference. That's why I went with my Samsung KS8000 as it has full 2016 HDR10 support and future proof for years and years now, and not just that it supports it, but has one of the best HDR engines among 2016 TV's.

With the extra luminance, images take on a whole new level of detail. Dark scenes become less of a gloom-fest – you’ll be able to pick out far more in the shadows – while the added vigour of bright areas helps them to leap out of the screen. Colours also become richer and more lifelike, with more delicate blends and shifts in tone. Basically, it makes things look more realistic, more impactful and more detailed. And now HDR isn’t confined to still images: it’s on your TV and the cinema screen.
Yes, but it’s a different kind of detail. HDR isn’t about increasing the number of pixels, but about making every pixel that’s already there better. And this means that, while 4K generally requires a large screen size to prove effective, HDR’s advantages are plainly visible on a screen of any size.
Within Hollywood, some TV and filmmakers believe that HDR could be a bigger deal than 4K. Howard Lukk, VP of production technology for Walt Disney Studios, told Variety: “There’s a feeling in Hollywood, and even at the Walt Disney Studios, in order to change over the complete marketplace to a new format, we really need more than just pixels. Adding more dynamic range and more contrast really makes a big difference.”

Brah thats CAD style, although I would expected him to wait for a bigger discount on that B tier TV. Think of all the upgrades he is getting over his tube TV. He is jumping into the smart faux K TV world. Even got him a remote with a Netflix button. Can't wait for the thread complaining how dumb smart TVs are because of this one experience with a cheap set.
CAD if this is a TV for your kids room I think you could find a better deal on some other bullshite. If it was me I would move your living room TV into the kids room and upgrade that TV. You can get a nice new 2016 55" Samsung for only a couple hundred dollars more.

I went by Costco today and saw this TV in person. For the price and where this TV will be placed (my bedroom), it appeared to be a very good deal as there certainly is "value" there.

Reviews are good. I think Costco is matching the sams $490 pricing too.
Eta I still want a 75"+ OLED for a fair price so I'm buying cheap until that time

I'm with CAD on wanting a 75"+ OLED. I currently have a 55" side lit 2010 model Samsung. It is good, but really want a nicer tv. What are those larger models going for these days?
Posted on 6/6/16 at 9:14 pm to CAD703X
Yeah that's why I said if you're waiting to spend big down the road then it's fine as long as you know what you're getting.
HDR is a game changer for 4K. The difference is quite drastic. It's incredible.

I laughed at the thread title because I went to SAMs and looked at TVs a couple weeks ago.
A young employee came over to help. I asked about that model, and his exact words, spoken firmly and without hesitation, were "complete crap."
I'm not sure what led him to that opinion, but he mentioned that it always wanted to do Roku stuff rather than sat/cable which is what most folks use the most.
Consider the source: SAMs kid. But the complete crap reference in the title cracked me up.
