A lot, if not most, of it was trolling.

Yeah some was just to get a reaction but probably not the racial things. A lot of what he said was completely true about race relations, especially in that era. Pointing out the times when racism is prevalent doesnt make him "a troll" or "race baiter." Making things about race when they aren't racial makes someone those things.

What seems to have been almost forgotten due to Ali's social importance - which I agree was significant - is just how incredible he was as a fighter. He defeated Liston, Frazier twice, Norton twice, Shavers, and took down the previously undefeated Foreman. Most of those fights were after his prime. He truly was poetry in motion.

You can make a strong case for Ali being the GOAT heavyweight.

You can make a decent case for Ali being the GOAT boxer.

But all this GOAT this and GOAT that coming from everyone is nonsense. He was a great boxer and let's leave it at that. The stuff that he said about Joe Frazier was just as racist as anything else being said during the civil rights movement. Ali hated white America and any black man who had any respect for people with light colored skin.

Stop making Ali out to be some American hero. He was filled with hated in his day.

He's the GOAT of being tGOAT. He's the reason the term exists. The embodiment of Greatness.

He was larger than life.

If you have to ask, you'll never get it.

I didn't grow up in his generation and didn't watch boxing so he's the goat of nothing to me.

Keep seeing GOAT thrown around referencing Ali

He's the only American athlete who transcended sports on a Global level-- not just in terms of fame-- I mean MJ was super famous globally and the Babe was in the US-- but in that his actions outside of the ring meant as much or more as his actions in it-- like Clemente to the Dominican.

No one really gives a crap if Lebron takes a stand on BLM or that Tebow was pro-life, what Ali said mattered to people-- in large part because he walked the walk in a way that even a guy like Tim didn't-- think of what Pat Tillman did (if he hadn't died, just served) but instead of a Top 15 Safety doing it-- it in a sport that's only a niche viewing experience outside of the US its Lebron-- but even that doesn't really get to it because Lebron at his peak wasn't as central as Ali was at his, I don't think any athlete or star can be because our attentions are more divided now.

Did Ali ever drive the Zamboni to the ring? Did he give everyone a beer bath?

I think not.

It's actually a pretty great story if insane-- he basically soiled himself for days on end prior to his pre Draft medical and then got classified as mentally unstable or something.

Now, he's changed his tune as to what happened but that was his claim in interviews in the 70s.

If a white person would have said the same things he said then they would be labeled the biggest racist of all time
