Jim Brown. It's rare for an athlete to be among the best ever in two sports.

He played on the Dream Team. If you were born before 85ish you probably remember that.

I've heard that Pete Maravich and Dr. J played a few exhibitions for the Hawks together (when the Hawks thought they had the ABA rights to Dr. J).

Both players were in their prime and the Hawks apparently easily won all of the games. Someone at the time mentioned that they complemented each other's games perfectly. Maravich leading the break and piling up assists (to go along with his scoring) while Dr. J filling the lane and throwing 'em down.

Just thought I'd mention it here in case anyone can find footage of those games or remembers them.

I was born 1985. First memory I have is the HIV announcement and the Dream Team. But obviously he wasn't "Magic" then, nor could I have really been able to understand greatness.

for many people that probably was the only time they were exposed to him if they were born between 1981-1985. if you were 11 for the dream team then yea, you got so see him. but if you were turning 7 when he won his last title, i dont know how many got to actually experience that. i knew what was going on when i was 7 when the lakers won in 2000 but thats only because it was huge in my family

I think the pro answer for me now I think about it is Bob Gibson.

He was considered the best athlete in baseball during the decade of the 60's.

I wish I was old enough to remember the NBA in the 80s. I never saw Showtime or Dr. J or Bird or Jordan when he was dropping 40 every game. My earliest memories are from around 1993.

I would say the number one athlete I regret not getting to watch though would be Roger Staubach. The reverence with which my father's generation talks about him is really unique in sports, the guy was a borderline national hero.

Damn, he played in 96.

So we're debating basketball with people who basically missed the 90s let alone 80s.

And Babe Ruth of course, to see what all the fuss us about.
