Not a lot of money, and useful. I still have mine that I got 16 years ago for graduation from a family friend.

Weber kettle grill. You can get him the little 18 inch one for about $80. Great gift that is relatively inexpensive and will last him all through college and beyond. It was one of the only things I actually remember getting as a HS graduation present. The cash, cheap knives, and other gifts were long gone.
