If you choose to expose yourself to risk, don't you deserve the consequence?

If you choose to invest all your money in high-tech penny stocks over DOW components, don't you deserve to lose everything?
If you buy a $20k 2008 BMW over a $20k 2016 Toyota as your only means of transportation, don't you deserve to be broken down on the side of the highway with a maintenance bill of $2,500?
If you have unprotected sex with random strangers, don't you deserve to get an STD?
If you choose to smoke weed, crack, or heroin while it's illegal, don't you deserve to be arrested, and have a criminal record?
If you date a scumbag girl/guy don't you deserve to have your credit ruined, beat on, cheated on, and left as a single parent?
I'm not really understanding sympathy that I've seen the last 10 years for people who knowingly expose themselves to risk. If you make $3k month, and get a 100% financed house at a note of $1,500....don't you (and the bank) deserve foreclosure?
It's not schadenfreude, it's the concept that they were not responsible for the bad that happened and are not "shamed", thus creating a platform for recidivism.
( ie. That hightech company was mismanaged, that BMW was a lemon, that stranger should have worn a condom, weed should be legal, that scumbag spade shouldn't have been a scumbag spade, that bank shouldn't have loaned me money)...and since they aren't to blame for their situation....more people will invest in the "whatever stock you like, car you like, person you like, house you want" versus the sensible.

I agree, especially when it comes to unhealthy eating and poor living habits

I wasn't ready for this much reading on a Monday morning; however, I agree. Unfortunately, the world isn't looking out for people making poor choices, the world wants to make money off of those poor choices.
Next time, start a teacher thread.

My wife and I have had heated discussions over this, basically regarding what happened with the Tulane grad (which im sure is your point with this)
Its not that he deserved to be shot, but what a dumbass decision to walk in a sketchy hood in the middle of the night. I think the murderer should fry and I dont think the kid DESERVED this, but damn, help yourself out and make good decisions.
My wife thinks that saying what we are saying is blaming the victim, which isnt cool. I'm not blaming the victim, i just think the victim is a poor decision maker.

No, seeing the thumb marks on their arms makes me chuckle, what did/do you see in him?

No.
questioning the appropriateness of criminality of marijuana is a completely different discussion

you know it's illegal, but you don't agree with it.
No Conceal carry for me, no speed limit either? Work to change the rules, but you can't break them because you don't agree with them and not be held accountable.

There's risk in almost anything. You can risk putting yourself out there and loving a good person. Just because they don't love you back, do you deserve that?

So now a woman deserves to be beat. And when you see marks on them you laugh?
This shows what a pathetic loser you are that is crying for attention on a mesg board.

I don't think 'deserve' is the right word... but I don't feel bad for them.

I think it's a little more complicated. If you run ridiculous risks then then consequences will happen. Those consequences may or may not be bad. For example, if you bet on the green 0 on a roulette wheel the chances are that you'll lose. But occasionally someone wins.
The trick is to have a good sense of the risk/reward relationship, and sadly most people just don't have that.

I get your point and agree in principal. But dying over a bad decision isn't on the same level as getting a ticket for running the stop sign. So the "shite happens/play stupid games" attitude isn't fitting for the murder victim.

So thought this was about unprotected sex...

I don't think that "deserve" is the right word, but they should expect the most likely result to occur from their actions and I don't typically "feel" for people who consistently make bad decisions.

Not all of your examples are equal. If you invest in high risk investments, then yes, you should have to deal with the negative consequences. But, you also deserve all of the reward if they play in your favor. You don't automatically deserve the negative side.
Same with the Car. You do open yourself to higher risk on maintenance, but you may also get more out of the car. More often than not, that's not the case, but I don't think it's necessarily cut and dry. I see plenty of people out there driving 10 year old "luxury" cars getting all the value they can out of them.
With the house thing, you don't deserve to be foreclosed on, but you deserve all the responsibility that comes with taking on that note. Which is foreclosure/bankruptcy/ruined credit if you can't swing it. In fact, it should probably be a worse repercussion. But if you make 3k a month and pay that note every month, you don't deserve foreclosure. Just take care of your responsibility, no matter how stupid a decision it was to take it on.
Most of your others are hard to have sympathy for. Especially drugs. Because since they are illegal (no matter what your stance on which ones should be legal is), then technically you do deserve to be arrested.

FIFY, only because sometimes risks pay off. There's risk in everything, good and bad.
