Cursive Writing, Should this be mandated in elementary school?

Seems to me kids have enough things to learn (that they aren't learning). I was taught it, don't use it. Great if you WANT to learn it but waste of time for those who don't. Agree or disagree?

Really.....you think our education system is too tough for kids? I don't think our systems great, especially in Louisiana, but it isn't because there's too much to learn, that's for damned sure.

I'm not sure where this push came from (guessing some email someones grandmother forwarded them about common core), but my third grader just did cursive writing...Its not dissapearing

I may be in the minority in thinking cursive is a worthwhile endeavor. Sure, it's a frivolity, but it instills the following:
- Experience of practice making perfect
- Taking pride in one's work
- Instilling confidence on being able to read "adult" writing
- Linkage to the past
Immediately useful? No not really, but it's a good way of teaching other things besides just a new script.

I never use cursive unless I'm signing something. Teachers were fricking liars when they said you're gonna always use cursive when you're older.

I think cursive has a lot of uses.
I have cursive to thank for being able to write legibly.
I also have cursive to thank for being able to write quickly. If I didn't know cursive I couldn't take the notes I do at the speed I do. I write a blend of print and cursive. I know which letters can be linked with other letters in the most efficient way.
One good, language-based effect of this type of writing is you intimately know, from practice writing cursive, if you are misspelling a word -- if the tails of letters have to do weird things to link a whole word together, then you are on the wrong track, bub!
I think that is a very good tool for students starting out.
Plus, careful attention to how to form letters and form letters in a sequence can be beneficial for students at a young age across many other disciplines; not just writing and spelling.

I don't know if it's necessary, but it's the only way I can write. If I attempt regular block style my handwriting looks like that of a 2nd grade kid named Jud who lives in a trailer park.

I had a teacher tell me cursive is no longer necessary due to the easy access to computers. Cursive was the professional way to compose a document, but now that everyone has access to a computer there is no need for cursive.

Yeah. Unfortunately I think it's something that is lacking as a general concept these days.

Pretty sure they dropped the mandated part

Let's take a stand against it!! The founding fathers were slave owners and they signed the declaration of independence in cursive, not to mention that they were white males. No diversity or inclusion....I am pained every time I see cursive writing.

No, it's useless. They should be taught how to read it, but not required to write it.

Good for signing your name, not much else.

Learning cursive is definitely good for motor skills coordination.

Without cursive, how would you know how to spell Phil Rirruto?

I'd rather resources be expended teaching kids to write cursive than brainwashing kids into believing that deviant behavior is normal.

Anyone that wants to challenge me on why cursive is important can. You've seen some of my arguments. Can't wait to hear a counter-argument.
I will entertain a good argument!
