Higher standards of living, more focus on superficial things equals greater likelihood of depression.
This. Placing too much value on material goods and status symbols and appreciating how good we really have it. But we are told everyday by the media and our politicians how shitty it is here.

So from this:
quote:
My speculation being, whether I personally believe in God and/or organized religion or not, it has positive societal benefits. Of course, if true, some would comment about "opiate of the masses" and such. And while I'm sure that's true to some extent, I'd suggest alternatively the result could come from less of a focus on material things and selfish desires and more on peace and helping others.
You got this?:
quote:
you seem to believe that religion can prevent or cure depression.
I think you were reading what you wanted to read.

In other words, it's possible that obesity is a risk factor but something inherent to the black population is a protective factor.
Black people(especially older black people) tend to be more religious than white people. That could certainly be a factor. Also black men and women usually have larger families than white men and women. So that could be seen as a larger source of emotional support for a person if they are struggling.
You could say the same things for Hispanics as well. Many come from much larger families than whites and many hold very strong religious(mostly Catholic) beliefs. Suicide very much goes against their faith. If your religious beliefs dictates that suicide is wrong and could even push you out of a spot in Heaven...you are going to be less likely to seriously consider suicide than someone with no strong religious beliefs.

Stop making sense - this is the OT, no place for that here.

Mental health cost money. Budgets get cut and crazy people are on the streets. The violent ones become police issues. As a result they are overburdened. To relieve that they need more money. Where exactly are the savings?

Just a thought. There is a concept of maternal deprivation. Withholding affection from an infant, that can lead to significant issues. People are joking about social media, but it seems like we interact less and less in any meaningful way (TD is very meaningful), so is it possible people feel completely neglected which causes the wires in the brain to become crossed and fricked up?
Suicide wasn't a thought when I was a teen. There was "I'm going to run away" when mom and dad got mad, but ending my life never occurred to me.
We shun mental illness, but there should be compassion and understanding. People endure some awful shite.

Our white guilt is beginning to be unbearable and it will only get worse unless we do something about it.

Causes, anyone?
Computers and cell phones.
Nobody can live a normal life and be that connected.

Computers and cell phones.
Nobody can live a normal life and be that connected.
Basically, we are looking at trend variables and maybe we should look at cyclical variables.

All I can say is that the above things make me suicidal.

is data across all countries available? Curious to see country vs country, developed vs non-developed, etc

Doubtful. Black men and women have the highest rates of obesity and the lowest rates of suicide.
Well that's because every time they head to the kitchen to get a knife to slit their wrists they wind up grabbing some fried chicken, watermelon and Kool-Aid instead......
It's truly a vicious cycle.

My mistake. Those poor brave souls that took their own lives. Maybe we should pin a gold star on their surviving family members lol.
Hey guys, I found the resident douche bag of this thread.

The price of living on electronic devices perhaps
Absolutely. Rx drug epidemics also don't help.

Nice job being condescending to everyone who has a suicide attempt victim in their family. Keep throwing stones from your glass tower, you count.
