Paris (AFP) - A painting stumbled upon in the attic of a house in France is an authentic work by Italian Renaissance master Caravaggio and could be worth up to 120 million euros, experts said Tuesday.
The owners of the house near the southwestern city of Toulouse discovered the dramatic 400-year-old painting when they went to fix a leak in the ceiling.
The large canvas of the beheading of General Holofernes by Judith from the apocryphal biblical Book of Judith is in remarkably good condition, and was painted between 1600 and 1610, specialists believe.
Expert Eric Turquin said it could be worth as much as 120 million euros ($137 million), describing the painting as having "the light, the energy typical of Caravaggio, without mistakes, done with a sure hand and a pictorial style that makes it authentic".

I will never understand visual art. Ever.

If there is one thing in life I'll never understand or be able to appreciate it like it should be...it's art.

Paintings like the one in the OP I can appreciate. Some of these guys could paint a scene and make it look like a photograph.
What I don't get is the crap where it looks like some toddler smeared a bunch of paint across a canvas with his butt.

I don't see the point in spending 137 mil on anything let alone a picture

I honestly wouldn't spend $137 on it, much less 1 million times that.

I basically agree.
I'm not one to look a picture and say "that's it?" I can look at some historical painting and realize the work, the talent, the God given skill that went into it and appreciate it for all that had to happen to produce that final outcome.
What I do not understand is how/why someone would be willing to pay $100M for it.

We had this debate in a thread a month or so ago.

Its not the actual artwork its the name attached to it.

When visiting Greece and Rome I was always more interested in the architecture than in the paintings, so I get you.

Caravaggio is one of my favorite renaissance artists. Thanks for sharing

People who have the money to buy this understand its a great investment. Paintings like this only gain value with time.

That's a big painting to miss for any amount of time you are in a house until a leak needs fixing.
BRB going to check my attic again.

Heck of a lot better looking painting than his line of jeans, that's for sure.

At least it's a lot better than this shite which sold for like $75,000,000
