This is a new place where the Momma Goldberg's used to be by the north gates of campus. Looks like it just recently opened for a soft opening and I decided to give it a shot for lunch today. I got a philly cheese steak w/ fries and a drink and I thought it was very good, however it was way too expensive. For some reason they charge $1.50 to add cheese to the sandwich and fries and a drink was an additional $5. That ran my total up to $16 for a sandwich, fries, and a drink. It was a pretty good amount of food though, so next time I'll probably go with the half sandwich if I want to get fries and a drink with it.
They also have a pretty limited menu, outside of the cheesesteak they only offer a limited variety of pizza and stromboli. Between that and the prices they may have a tough time keeping people coming in. It does look like they will be open late night though, so they should be able to make some good money feeding drunk students.
Also, Tyrus Thomas is a co-owner, I think He was in there today and was pretty active dealing with customers. I'd like to see this place do well. I love a good philly cheese steak and it'd be nice to see Tyrus do well. Just need to drop the prices a little and I think they'll be fine.

Overpriced sandwiches are a death sentence near a college campus.

Thats about 5.00 more than Philly Me Up by Drusilla and about 3.00 more than South of Philly for the same order. Of course theirs come with CHEESE on the their CHEESESTEAK

Why would you have to pay extra for cheese on a Philly CHEESE steak?
I like Philly cheesesteaks and I would love to see the place succeed, but $16 for a sandwich, fries and drink is kind of rough. Especially in a college market
EDT: It looks like he is going with the model of Pat's and Geno's in Philly which evidently charge you a buck more for cheese. Unfortunately, BR is a long way from Philadelphia and people here are exactly connoisseurs of fine steak sandwiches like the folks in Philly.

I don't care if it's Shaquille's place.
Put an up charge on a Philly cheesesteak for cheese, and I'm walking out the door.
Forget that.

"Sir if you want pizza sauce on your pizza it's going to be an extra 6 dollars"
Then again, pizza chains basically do this, they just don't tell you. They just put it in the price

So the sandwich itself was $9? That's how much geno's charges and they're in a more expensive market and are nationally known. $7 max is what this place should start at and then $1 for cheese. Because not everyone wants cheese so it's easier to add than subtract.
And should only be $4 for drinks and fries added. Way overpriced. You shouldn't be paying $16 for fast food essentially.

in Philadelphia it's a "steak" not a "cheesesteak"
hence the adder for cheese on your steak
not saying it's smart but it is authentic

Yep, it was a footlong sandwich though. Still overpriced though

I tried it yesterday. I got a full philly steak, waffle fries, drink and my little girl got a small one topping pizza. The total was around 27.00 and it took about 20 minutes to get our order. The philly steak was good. It was very similar to Philly Me Up. The waffle fries were waffle fries. The pizza was on par with Little Caesars which is to say dont go there for the pizza. All in all it was okay. If I was in the area and had a hankerin for a philly steak sandwich I would go again but I would not go out of my way to eat there.

The prices are in line with Liberty Cheesesteaks in New Orleans. Even the $4 or $5 to make a "combo" sounds about the same. I've found Liberty expensive and have rarely eaten there as a result, so, same boat.
BUT, Everything Philly does not have a "whiz" option. And to this, I've never understood why the whiz "cheese" at Liberty is more expensive than the other cheeses.

Mama Goldbergs had this same thought in mind. Then they found out that a vast majority of the students who go out, don't go to that area. They are either in Tigerland, Southdowns (Ivar's and Earl's), or Downtown.

Everything Philly had a "nacho" cheese option, which i guess was their version of "whiz"

Pita Pit and the Canes right there normally get good business late at night. They are still close enough to campus to get students to walk over from the dorm late at night.

I used to get Pita Pit late night all the time because it was the only thing open after 3 am (as I recall it would open til 4).
I just don't see myself, as a college student, saying to myself at 1 in the morning: "Man, I could go for a philly cheesesteak right now." Especially if it is priced at $16.
However, I could definitely say: "Man, I could go for a caniac right now" though -- no matter how much that a-hole Todd Graves jacks up the price. Drunk Fonz loves Chicken Fingers.
Every time I went and visited Auburn, I was at the original Mama's late night every night I was there. Those nachos were great. But it was its own stand alone restaurant with a great atmosphere. Too hard to recreate at LSU in that crappy parking lot.

I was looking forward to this so much when I made it up there about 5 years ago. Needless to say I was very disappointed. Flavorless greasy meat covered with cheese whiz at one, processed cheese slices at the other. I set my expectations too high b/c of all the hype. I guess I expected Mario Batali to be throwing sandwiches out of a window.
I'll pass on it and stick with a quality Bahn Mi for under $7.00.
