I ride my bike across crosswalks.
However.....I'm riding my bike in a designated pedestrian/biking path that is basically like a huge sidewalk next to the road and it crosses busy streets at crosswalks.

I see cyclists run lights, run stop signs,
I get pissed when cyclist do this if I'm at an intersection and they just assume I'm going to let them blow through the stop sign or stop light. But if nobody is there, who cares? They aren't causing any more danger than if a car were to do it, and it doesn't impact anyone else. It's funny, because the same people that bitch and moan on here about cops doing inspection sticker checkpoints are the same ones saying that they should spend their time ticketing cyclists that run through stop signs.

There are MANY cyclists who do not seem to realize that any law applies to them. I feel police should do something as well.
I think most cyclists know that the law applies to them, but they also know that the likelihood of getting stopped by police for breaking the law is extremely low, so they are willing to take the risk.

have said it before and I will say it again, cyclists need to obey the laws themselves or they should expect people driving cars to not obey as well.
First, this is the dumbest statement. So a cyclist breaking the law gives cars the right to run red lights??? Second, I agree that a cyclist certainly should not think anything other than themselves being completely in the wrong if they are in an accident where they did something improper.

There are roads better suited for riding. Major roads sometimes aren't terrible to ride on to be honest. None of the roads you listed are good to ride on certainly. You'd never catch me on one and I'll call a person riding one an idiot as quickly as you do.

Again, as someone living where there are plenty more cyclists than BR (I've got 4 major bike shops within 10 minutes of me), this is a biased statement. I could easily say that most drivers are criminals and we need to do something about it, since drivers commit "errors" just as regularly and flagrantly as cyclists.

cyclists don't break anymore laws than any other people on the road do
They SHOULD break a whole hell of a lot less if they want to be safe.

I'm pretty sure I ran across some old posts by you on beginnertriathlete or slowtwitch (can't remember). Is that you posting over there? Could have been a really old post I pulled up in a search and the name caught my eye.
yeah, I don't post too much on either of them anymore, but do a good bit of lurking on ST now.

BR and Hammond have a lot of retarded cyclist that will ride the wrong fricking way.
Ive been considering getting a bike but BR isn't really conducive for safe biking in most areas. Then you have drivers that don't share the road and the group of ignorant bike riders that ride the wrong direction.

I think of it like this...when a cyclist gets hit a large percentage of people point to the laws they may have broken...regardless of whether or not it played a part in the accident. A cyclist can get hit in New Orleans and people in Baton Rouge complain about cyclists on River Road.
People hate cyclists because they are an inconvenience, not because they break the law. MOST of the people complaining about cyclists breaking the law break the same laws when behind the wheel but because cyclist are an inconvenience, they complain,...even if they are an inconvenience for less than a minutes.
Legally, you can't operate a golf cart while intoxicated but thousands of people do it on golf courses every day and nobody gives a shite. If someone was to drive on to a golf course with a monster truck and start running over golfers and carts, nobody would say shite about the laws that were being broken by the drunk golfers. Why, because they are not an inconvenience.
Hiding behind laws that cyclists break is weak.

Wasn't the cyclist killed by a drunk driver on perkins impaired?

I honestly don't even know. Once I realized it was not a "cyclist" but just someone on a bike I kinda tuned out. I just wanted to bump the thread when I saw that story about the doc in california.

good point...but the cyclist seem to have used this to bring attention to the fact BR isn't cyclist friendly. Now we have a hideous ghost bike memorial to look at when going down Perkins

Yeah, I try not to pay attention to those wingnuts
Like I said, I don't think its bout law breaking at all. It's about inconvenience motorist and putting a larger burden of responsibility. As a driver if you're not paying attention and hit/kill a cyclist, you could actually go to jail. Not just be ticketed for hitting a car, but actual jail. Not to mention the 30 seconds it may cause on the commute to wherever the person is going.
Cyclists that want it both ways are equally as illogical.

Which is why I haven't ridden a bike in many years. People here go out of their way to mess with people who ride bikes. It is odd.

this is part of my problem. Not really worried about jail just the fact that I could kill someone

I have thought about biking to work if I worked close enough to do it, but it would all depend on what roads I have to take. I wouldn't want to ride on a major road and cause people to back up, it is a safety issue and I just don't like being an arse that delays others.

Are you sure? They found weed in his system if I recall correctly.

THC can remain in the system for up to 67 days depending on metabolism. Do all people who smoke marijuana (days before) and ride a bicycle for transportation deserve to be decapitated by drunk drivers (0.307 percent)?
This wasn't Joseph Branch's first time either. He decided to pass a car which was driving in the left lane (because she saw the bicyclists) and he decided to pass aggressively. 100% his fault.
He also had a "going away" party with tons of alcohol before sentencing. Nice guy right?
