Damn. That place is a sub 3rd world country within itself. A serious slice of hell. People here always bitch about America, but at least you know that shite can never happen to you here. I'm seriously praying for this guy.
I suggest this book to anyone.
Great read and fairly short but absolutely brutal.

Unless somebody gets him out, that's effectively a death sentence. No way he survives 15 years hard labor in that place.

His name is Otto and attends UVA. Kid hasn't worked a day in his life. This should be fun.

It's SOP for the US to wait for the sentencing before sending some poor politician over there to get them back. Laura Ling (Lisa's sister) was sentenced to 12 years hard labor in 2009, a month later we sent Bill Clinton over to get her back. Same for Kenneth Bae a couple years ago.

I wonder if Laura Ling was ever actually in the general population doing labor camp things during that time or if they kept her separate and well treated while the negotiations were going on.

I'll hazard a guess that none of these Americans see the "real" prisons. The N Koreans know the Americans are bargaining chips & propaganda, probably not a good idea to even show them the conditions of the real prisoners.

I would go full Bruce Wayne of those fools. They would put me in solitary for THEIR protection.

That's their own god damned fault, why bring that into this? It's irrelevant.

Well, he knew he shouldn't go to North Korea and his sense of entitlement made him feel like he could. N.K proved him wrong.
Now American tax payer would probably have to fork over millions of dollars to get him freed while people over here are still homeless and hungry.
Thanks OTTO!
spot on. screw that kid let his own family negotiate if they wish.

I was in a class at lsu one time where students were arguing how the US isn't the greatest nation on earth, how there's no freedom here, blah blah blah. I truly couldn't believe what my ears were hearing.

No. As the most powerful force on the globe, we can not allow some dork court in North Korea to sentence one of our citizens to 15 years for dicking around with a poster. We ca not, and will not allow it.

I assure you that the price is never low.
I know it sucks, and I feel for the family, but he knew the dangers of going to NK.

Do I feel this punishment is harsh, yes. But you are not in the US anymore, so our laws do not apply, a lot of US kids do not understand this until they do something. Then you go to a country known to hate the US and steal something??? WTF...
Though it's funny to see all the tough guys on the board with NO SYMPATHY for him. So weird.

USA Should tell N Korea they have one year to release him or a nuke will be dropped on their arse.
