Chances are highly likely this kid didn't actually steAL anything. The fact that they make him read a prepared statement claiming he was paid by the US government and some American church to steal the sign is all the proof you need.
I dont think it was a coincidence they kept him four days before thier supposed hydrogen bomb test. Im sure they wanted a bargaining chip so they kept the American that was in the country.

Anyone who actually thinks that he was paid thousands of dollars by a US church by which he has no affiliation to steal a sign from NK is pretty dumb, IMHO.
Right. Anyone reading the article would realize this is most likely bullshite and he's been "shanghai'd" as a bargaining chip.

Wait he stole a banner to put up at church? Was it the first church of Satan or what?

This summer I'm traveling with a large contingent to Harbin, China. I was more concerned initially with its close proximity to NK than when I went to Kuwait two years ago.

How exactly is it evil? He was in their country. He broke their law. Now he is subject to their punishment. Sounds to me like we should do more of that in this country.

I don't understand how any of you would belive one thing from that statement. The North Korean government lies about everything. Hell, Kim Jong IL once sent out a press release to say he scored an 18 on his first 18 holes of golf he ever played.
This kid should not have gone there, but I doubt he did anything said in that statement.
Also, I hope no one who is saying this kid deserves torture ever once did something they regret when they were in college.

What he did was stupid and dumb, but geez I feel sorry for the guy. He's just a damn kid. He will be getting out at 36 most likely. what a nightmare. I remember being in Dubai and hearing about a kid who brought weed into the country (again another idiot) get 10 years just like that.
If you go abroad remember you're not in the US. Wow.

That's their own god damned fault, why bring that into this? It's irrelevant.
And so is what this kid did, I say ignore it. Unless he was detained and abducted from outside of North Korea, he deserve what he gets.

It is actually kind of frightening that so many people blindly accept that there was wrong doing on his part.

I guess North Korea doesn't have millennials. They don't do hard labor, unless it's sleeping on their parents couch between Xbox sessions.

Their daily meal ration is about 6 ounces of corn meal. They can also eat any bugs or rats that they catch.
When they become too weak or sick to work they are carted off to a different area and left to die. Keep in mind, this whole country is starving. 25% of adult males have suffered from malnutrition for so long that they are unfit for military duty. Their minds cannot process simple orders and requests.
Unless we trade him out, he is screwed.
