I have the opportunity to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan. Not to really turn this into a comparison thread, but I also have the opportunity to move to Phoenix or I could stay in Alabama.

The position in Ann Arbor is more secure and more lucrative than the other two. I have a ton of pros for living in Arizona (outdoors and surrounding area and large, metropolitan area) and living in Alabama (from here, family and friends here, I like Birmingham).

But it's hard looking past the long, hard winters of Ann Arbor and the proximity to Detroit.

Can anyone speak to what's great about Michigan?

I saw a girl's boobs from there once, and they were pretty fantastic.

Not really in Ann Arbor. I could move outside of the area and commute, but I'd also like to avoid bullet wounds.

Ann Arbor seems like a really cool place to live.

Ann Arbor is nice. I liked it.

The proximity to Detroit is not a factor. The thing about Michigan is that all of the towns like Ann Arbor out on the periphery of Detroit are white-flight escape-towns. They're all really nice, well kept an lilly white. The issues Detroit has are confined to Detroit (and Flint, and Gary, Indiana) and not present in the countryside.

I'm debating a move to St. Louis myself, and even the winters there is my main drawback. No way I would be able to withstand a single winter in Michigan.

Ann Arbor is a pretty cool college town. Can't speak for the rest of the state.

I've heard that Grand Rapids is a pretty legit town. That's pretty much all I know about Michigan

Polo in Bliss, MI is a solid plus in the summer.
Winter is a reprehensible, painful bitch. You will spend a lot of your summer getting ready for winter.

I've been to Phoenix. Nice area but honestly Denver is better IMHO. But it's solid. Sorta like Austin but in the middle of the desert.

I've never been to Ann Arbor but you'll get adjusted to the winter pretty quickly. And upstate Michigan is a winter playground.

I know B'ham pretty well (I have family there) and they all like it but trust me, you'll see there's many better places once you start looking. It just looks good compared with everywhere else in the Deep South.

I would much, MUCh rather live in phoenix or alabama than michigan.

Not sure about your money situation but if the raise for MI isn't all that extreme I'd go to one of the other 2.
