As I've said before, there are no traditional black names. Prior to recently, white and black names were essentially the same.

A racist cartoon saying white runners can only beat black ones by cheating.

We are going through the same process where I work with a black female. Fortunately before she arrived we were tipped off that she has EEO'ed her way her entire career. Her direct supervisor gave her every chance and dotted all the I's with the paper work. She even had another black female training at the same time who is performing well and getting qualified/certified. She also had a black female try to train her. When she failed at her job it was because of... You guessed it, racism. Now defend yourself from the accusations.

I grew up in a very poor and crime filled neighborhood, but I knew that I didn't want to spend my life that way, and so I worked my way out of that environment. It's not hard, just takes effort.

Did you have supportive parents? Did you know your dad?

Not saying where you grew up wasn't bad, but there are parts of north Baton Rouge that look like 3rd world countries. a kid who grows up in an environment with ghetto parent(s), friends who deal drugs, going to shitty schools with fights every days, it's not so simple as him just waking up and saying "I want to go to Tulane one day," when college has never been considered an option for anyone in his family. Just imagine the amount of discouragement you would have from people who want you to stay living a shite life and not make something better of yourself.

This is very, very real and extremely sad.

I've worked with these kids who have decided, come hell or high water, they are getting out of the ghetto. Yet, they can't celebrate their wins and accomplishments at home or with family/friends for fear of being yelled at or physically abused.

Floored me.

Truth.

Reality is, for the last 20+ years, blacks have gone into the "let me create the most original name possible" routing under the pretense that the name "sounds" like a "real" black name.

Reality is, these names have pretty much ZERO linkage to African culture.

What they DO do though is advertise to anyone who sees them that there's a good chance you're a product of ghetto culture.

It's really not unlike some ridiculous hillbilly names and guess what. Those aren't helpful on resumes either.

They should send out names like "billy bob" and "bubba" and see how fast a callback they get.

Yes, and that is certainly a consideration. I was only trying to point out that being poor in America can change if you have the determination to make those changes.

Still thought, it begins with a mindset that I want to change my family tree. It requires thinking outside of your current circumstances. Its' tough to do, no doubt.

I live and work around some outstanding AA folks. I wouldn't trade any of them for the white trash I see all over the place.

Why? Because I know them.

But, more importantly what do I see on the news? AA crime. This, to me, is the fundamental reason whites don't hire AAs. There are bad assumptions of the entire race.
How is this resolved? AA leaders MUST get other AAs from living a life of crime, and get those to respect others, and like it or not, blend in to the middle class world.

Yeah it's terrible. I don't think people realize the struggle you would have to go through without any support network.

Really? So, back in the 60s and 70s, there were Laquandas, Keyshawns, Jakyllas, and LaDiamonds?

ETA: Apparently they used only 74-76. This time period is not lengthy enough for something to be considered "traditional".

Doubtful.

And those are all names that I've seen in clinics and in the hospital.

Also, what do you consider a "traditional black name"?

From the study:

quote:

To decide
on which names are uniquely African American and which are uniquely White, we use name frequency data
calculated from birth certificates of all babies born in Massachusetts between 1974 and 1979.

Doesn't really refute Scruffy's claim.
