Why don't most houses in Louisiana have gutters?

It's weird. Go anywhere else most houses you see have gutters. Here, almost none do. I don't think a single house on my block has gutters. What's the deal?

Mine does only around the back patio... Probably because with the amount of rain we get and the abundance of trees, they are just going to get clogged up.

Gutters are kind of a pain in the arse if you don't need them.

I have a section on the back of my house with gutters and I curse them in the fall.

Because they're a bitch to clean.

Because the different roof elevations make them irrelevant. I regrettably added gutters. What a waste of money and constant source of work. In hindsight, I would have just added one section on my front porch for guests using the front door.

I know they are mainly used in Dallas to avoid foundation issues. The ground here has more clay and rock, thus most houses have gutters. That's the word from my house inspector.

The purpose of gutters is to divert water away from the base of the house. You need them when you have a basement to avoid water seepage through the foundation walls of your basement, especially if you have a finished basement.
As there are typically no basement in the New Orleans area they don't serve a purpose. My house in Baton Rouge had a partial basement which was always flooded.
And houses in areas that get a lot of snow typically won't have them as the weight of the snow and ice will rip them off the house

I have a basement and landscaping that I don't want to wash away. Of course, I'm on the top of a small mountain in Birmingham.

You only need gutters if you have a basement or crawl space that rain water might accidentally drain into and flood.

Louisiana's swampy soil prevents the building of basements and crawl spaces, so no gutters are needed to wick away the excess water.

I have gutters on the back of the house so I can go out the back doors without getting soaked in the rain.

Building right now and I am going with gutters. I think most houses in my new hood have them.

good elevation on the roof and an overlap to keep water from going in the walls, why would you need gutters?

We dont have basements, and diverting your rain water 8 feet isnt going to make a substantial difference in this city.

In my neighborhood there are a LOT of trees, including many pine trees. Even with screens it would be a timely chore to keep them clean.

You don't need them here because of the Freezeline/foundation. Rain on the foundation isn't an issue.

Waste of money.

good question. I paid extra to have gutters put on my house. I hate that trench that rain water makes around the houses that don't have gutters.

I have gutters on the back side of my house that keep the rainwater runoff from my roof off my exposed wooden decking. If not for the deck I wouldn't have the gutters. It's a PITA to get up there and clear out the leaves and pine straw.
