Iphone sales sliding?

Is there a real need to purchase a new iphone when one has a 5s or more recent one? At some points, the phones don't really change that much. Are phones getting closed to maxed out in terms of what they can do?

Maybe somewhat..processing power is really top notch right now but i think you'll be surprised at what the next several years bring in terms of raw speed and multitasking. That being said, I'm really excited about what the iPhone 7 Plus has to offer. No real need to carry a digital camera around unless you're into professional photography

Absolutely. With the new pricing / purchase options from the big carriers, there will be great pricing pressure in Apple. If they can't get cost down, sales will slide. The carriers are no longer hiding the cost of the phone in the monthly service plan

I mean, I'm a generational phone guy. In other words, 5 to 5s wasn't a huge difference, but 5 to 6 was pretty epic. I had no reason to get a 6s, but will be getting a 7.
Hope the price point starts to come down. Would be fantastic.

You're right. The features are pretty limited. The biggest jump recently was the iPhone 4s to the iPhone 5 allowing LTE. Other features have been pretty limited, but the IOS upgrades have allowed some nice workflow features.
The biggest difference is that the processor speed eventually becomes an issue on older phones. My wife still has a 4, and the internet became unusable about a year ago. She still had the original IOS iteration, and upgrading to a newer one did not fix the issue.

Features aren't why people upgrade, the 2 year upgrade track the wireless providers had people on are why they upgraded. It will indeed be interesting to see how sales for both iPhone and Android continue now that the 2 year contract has gone away.

Once you pay off your phone your phone bill is less. Some people might chose to keep it that way. The old way you were being financially penalized for not upgrading.

With Next, it is still apparent that you are paying full price for the phone. I think a lot of people will choose to keep their phones and lower their bills. With the old 2 year contracts, your bill stayed the same regardless, so it was a no-brainer to get a $500 phone for $200.

But people will still jump carriers. I just signed up for AT&T's plan in September. If I'm not satisfied after I pay off the phones, I'll probably jump back to Verizon. Much more to it now than just 2 year contracts. Some people always want the latest and greatest and will buy the new phones. Some, like me, would prefer a lower bill and buy one a model older to save $100 over the life of the contract.

quote:Right. People now have the option to lower their bills by using old phones. Some will go further than you and use phones 3 or 4 years old and save much more than $100.

some of us poor suckers have multiple family members with phones.
my 2 teenagers:
- son upgraded from myTouch (bought for $50/ea on ebay a couple years ago) to my old nexus 4 and has been loving it
- daughter upgraded from myTouch to motoG (which she recently dropped and shattered) to my OTHER nexus 4 that the wife used
- wife has a swappa iphone 5s i upgraded her to after years of trying to 'embrace' the nexus 4
- 7yo step daughter has a 'wifi only' LG leon i paid $45 for last year before my trip overseas. it was just sitting around not being used so she gets to video hangout with her dad & do lots of stuff
- i upgraded from a HTC HD2 to the nexus 4 to a cragslist nexus 5 which i'm still rocking
so in short, we aint got no new tech at my house but at $120 (after taxes) for 4 lines with tmo i'm not complaining.

Yeah, and I'll add to my earlier post that we had to buy a craigslist iphone4 for my wife after she drowned the 5C only a few months into our old Verizon contract. At the time there wasn't all of these options to buy, and we were stuck in the 2 year contract for the subsidized phone. I ended up keeping an old one for my kids to play with when we each got a 6 in September. So we were stuck paying the subsidized contract price and having to use an older phone. It sucked. I'm glad we have the newer phones now, mainly for performance and screen size. My jump from the 5 to the 6 wasn't nearly as drastic as her jump from the 4 to the 6. And I bought the insurance this time, and put it in an OtterBox before I gave it to her.

Not sliding, but slowing down. YoY is still growing, but at a slower pace.

Absolutely not. Is technology getting close to maxed out in terms of what it can do? Were desktop computers maxed out in 1988 in terms of what they can do? As an example, look at the Music Memos app that Apple released last week. LINK

It is now easier than ever to upgrade every year if you wanted to. LINK

Getting a new iPhone every year is easy.
After 12 payments, you can get a new iPhone and start a new iPhone Upgrade Program. No more waiting for your carrier contract to end. Just trade in your current iPhone for a new one, and your new program begins.
Finally, we are getting to the point where everyone in the world who can afford a smartphone has one. The market is nearing saturation, especially at the high end where Apple operates.

Once you pay the phone off, the monthly payment drops significantly. Therefore you can save a lot of money if you don't need a new phone at the end of that period.

Apple is for sure going to have to adjust. iPhone refreshes are built on the two year carrier contract cycle and that is getting broken up by competitors to Verizon and AT&T.
That's a good thing for consumers but a bad thing for companies like Apple that have bought into that model.
The mobile plateau is real. Things were wild between 2010 and maybe 2014 or so. It's all kinda settled down now and nothing mind blowing appears to be on the horizon.
That also translates to tablets. Since the original iPad, I've been on a two year schedule. I passed this last one because just nothing there to make me spend $500 when my original Air serves my purposes and I bought the Watch which is fantastic. Just gonna wait on the second gen Pro to come out and get the first one at a good price.
