Do powerball rules prohibit you from selling a winning ticket?

Another poster mentioned that if they won, to maintain complete anonymity, they would sell their winning ticket to a hedge fund (or maybe an already well known rich guy) for a small discount.
Does anyone know if the lottery rules in LA or other various states would allow for this?

Is it not possible to maintain anonymity if you win the lottery? I've heard you can do so by going through a lawyer.

I hear some states don't allow anonymity, but I'm sure there's a loophole. I would never want my name or picture published for that.

I know in Louisiana, a person does have to claim it publicly, but I don't know if the purchaser of the ticket has to be the claimant.

I have a colleague who use to work for a financial advisor who handles the assets for a winner of a previous mega millions jackpot. There are only a handful of states that allow you to remain anonymous and the ones that don't make it impossible for anyone to claim the ticket anonymously, even if a trust or LLC accepts the money. They exhausted all options to keep the winner anonymous and although the money was paid to a blind trust directly from the state lotto, the name of the winner/individual had to be public record according to the law.
Sad part is the winner has had to relocate three times, purchase kidnapping insurance and has had to hire people just to go through their mail because so many people are after their money.
Just recently a man from Jourdan successfully sued the state of Oregon so he could claim his winnings anonymously. He proved that his life would be in danger if his identity was made public. So if you win, its possible you could sue your state lotto and remain anonymous.

What state was this? Sure your colleague isn't full of shite? In Louisiana if you set up a trust, then the trust is paid and the only name that is on public record is that of the trust and the trust rep/attorney.

How would the lotto find out anyways? You think that they'e going to go pull CCTV footage from Mr. Punjabs 7-11 to see if YOU actually purchased the ticket?

Ask yourself how they could ever know who actually bought the ticket until someone came forward. I don't know if it's legal or not but it's certainly doable.

On a side-note, I think a person would be hard-pressed to find a hedge fund/super wealthy person/corporation/whatever to purchase the winning ticket without DEFINITIVE answers, especially when it's 100s of millions of dollars in play.

This. The purchaser will have to disclose that they bought it so they can deduct the purchase price and be taxed on the net proceeds.

I hear this a lot, but is it really such a big deal if you've won $200+ million? There is no real way to hide the change that would have on your life.
