Ok management guys I need a pep talk. Last year I passed on six or seven 2.5 year old bucks. I ended up only shooting a doe after having lots of shot opportunities on smaller deer. This year I passed on a 137 inch 3.5 year old 10 point. I just got a text that it looks like my target buck was poached last night. Someone who has been through this please talk me out of killing the next thing that walks by.
Here is the buck that I have been waiting on for two years now. Dumbass was stupid enough to share the pic around and it ended up in our hands.I know deer wander but 4 farmers control 20k+ acres in a continuous block. This deer lives square in the middle of it and has never been spotted outside of a very defined range. None of them recognize neck beard with the deer. Just tired of letting stuff walk only to be shot by others.

I haven't shot anything nice in 4 years(unitl yesterday) and only hunt 500-535 acres with that much land you shouldn't have a problem letting deer walk. With that being said if your trigger finger is itchy then shoot something that will make you happy.

If it makes you feel any better that deer doesn't gross 130 inches.
If you passed on a 137" then you would have passed this one too.

The major problem I run into is low deer population. It is nothing but beans and rice. Every 1000 acres of land might yield 40 acres of timber, and that is being extremely generous. Cover is a huge limiting factor.
On this deer it is more about it being mature. He was a solid 4.5. Her he is last year.
And here this year.
The 137 was a year away, plenty of rack already but would have been a true stud next year. I watched him more times at 20 yards last year when he was a 100ish buck than I can count.
Just have a weak spot of strong 8's.

I hunt because i enjoy it. I find if i let decent bucks walk and dont kill anything, then at the end of they yr i hadnt killed anything and look back and aggervated because i spent so much money and even more time hunting/watching and have nothing to show for it.
Long story short, i kill any decent buck i see. I wont shoot small basket rack pencil
horn deer, but am not hesitant to kill a buck. Even if it is young. Too many factors, like poachers, death, neighbor killing it.. etc. Unless you have a high fence or thousands of acres, then the letn them walk talk is useless and you end up wasting time each yr (watching them grow) and for what? One day you will be dead and gone and that deer you let walk because he was 3.5 and you killed at 4.5 will be forgotten. Enjoy the moment, kill what you want, and dont get caught up in the let them walk bs... if your happy thats all that matters

We are an AR state law club. I try to avoid shooting 1.5 yo deer but will shoot legal deer that look 2.5+.
I let someone 2.5s go earlier this week because my ice chest was filled, but will be happy if someone else enjoys shooting them. Hunting is supposed to be fun. Relax and enjoy it.

This.^^^
I went 7 or 8 seasons w/o killing a buck. During that time, I was teaching my son to hunt and helping him kill some bucks; I killed does for meat and herd management. I was content and happy. If I killed it buck it was going to be one worthy of mounting.
That brings us back to your dilemma.......what makes you happy? You're setting your own rules here, not anyone else.

Sucks that a fat guy killed it. You don't know that it was poached though. He could have easily killed it on his own property during legal hours. Deer move.
Happens to us all the time. We'll have pictures of a deer all year, hunt the hell out of it, and see it dead on Facebook in January after some guys wife shot it off their back porch two miles away.
I've let them walk and had somebody go to the same stand the next morning after the deer I let go and blasted it.
Unless I KNEW the deer was killed illegally (as in I know a guy who knows the guy who did it), I would chalk it up to bad luck and move on. That could be a good kid who killed his first nice buck legally and is very proud of it.

I don't let any deer 1.5 and older walk until my freezer is full.

If you want to kill deer like the one you are talking about, sacrifices have to be made and keep doing what you were doing, if you are more happy with killing more smaller basket racked bucks then start shooting

Ehh. During the rut they can travel very long distances sometimes. Especially if you have low numbers like you are talking. Several years back I was getting a picture of a good buck on my property. A friend killed a good deer around 1.75 miles down the road. He brought it to me to age and measure. Same deer I was getting pictures of. It had crossed 17 different properties before he shot it. 151" deer.

Lulz. You obviously know nothing about deer hunting.
