Questioning Joe Alleva's ability to make a good hire is ridiculious

If you look at his track record, he has done a very good job and bringing in the best people he could get.
1. Trent Johnson- 2 time coach of the year in 2 different conferences. Went to 2 Sweet 16's. Ended up being a poor fit but in Joe's defense he had just been hired to be LSU AD and didn't yet have a feel for his new position. In the situation he was in it was as good a hire as he could have made on paper.
2. Nikki Caldwell- Had done a very good job at UCLA, had SEC ties and had coached under the WBB GOAT and another HOFer.
3. Johnny Jones- Listened to the basketball people who told him JJ would be able to get the players in here needed to compete and look where we are. 4 years in and a steady incline. We currently have the most exciting basketball team we've had here in decades.
4. Beth Torina- Has been a very good hire, hs the softball team back in the WCWS

Dude, LSU is a perennial mediocre program and there is no way LSU can compete with the current openings
why would a coach want to come here?
do you not remember the 90s?

The majority of LSU fans care slightly about basketball, care a pretty good amount about baseball, and care alot about football. They could give two shits about women's sports.

Not to mention the Cutcliffe hire at Duke. He has done pretty well for them.

Those coaches are winning championships left and rt. Isnt that what this is about?
JJ may turn out great, but dont fool yourself, Alleva didnt need to use much negotiation tactics to lure Jones to baton rouge. there was a reason he was at North Texas for so long.

bahahahahaha
His two hires before him went 7-45 and 6-45.
His baseball coach went 112-214 and was caught giving steroids to his players.

1. Duke lacrosse.
2. Gave Miles a raise. Because Miles implied he might leave for Arkansas. Meditate upon that.
3. The best hire he's ever made, amongst a number of terrible hires, was David Cutcliffe.

JJ has done fine. He hires good assistant coaches, develops players, and recruits well. It doesn't matter that it was easy to get him here. Will he win a championship here? Who knows, but LSU being relevant every year in basketball is what we need right now.

Well ok, but you can't argue with the results and Joe did try to bring in some bigger name guys and they said thanks but no thanks, we don't want to go coach at a football school that plays in front of a 45% capacity arena on the reg.

We were 34-6 in the previous 3 years at that point, with an SEC title and NC game appearance. At that point, compared to what the going rate was for successful coaches, Les deserved a raise.

But you can't ignore his past hires, that alone gives you reason to question.
Trent and Nikki are terrible hires any way you slice it. All his hires at Duke failed, Except for cutcliffe, but he left before they were winning. So good on him for 1.

Nobody can bat 1.000. In retrospect they were not good hires but the process he uses was solid and based on the credentials of both before they came here they were both the best hires LSU could have made at that point.

You can have every advantage in the world and no matter who your AD is you can make the wrong hire.
Look at Texas right now.
Look at what Tenn has gone through.
Look at some of the hires made at Fla.
LSU is not immune to a bad coaching hire.
When Saban leaves Bama, they are not immune to a bad coaching hire. Look at the parade of coaches Bama has been through and only two of them, Stallings and Saban, have really panned out.
LSU made the best hire the athletic department or Emmert ever made in Saban and Bertman made a solid hire in Miles to replace him. Look at who Emmert hired at Washington, he was not so lucky and that program has suffered for ten plus years now.

I don't think it makes sense to excuse Trent Johnson. His resume doesn't change that it was a bad hire. In fact, anyone can hire off of a resume. Real ability to make good hires is to be able to look beyond the resume.
Caldwell and Trent both lack something EXTREMELY fundamental in college athletics...the ability to recruit successfully. That's a huge mistake to not figure that out during the hiring process.
Beth Torina has been a tremendous hire. And, Johnny Jones is basically the opposite of a resume hire. The jury is still out, but it's looking like a good hire that could be viewed as a great hire based on the trajectory of the program.

Man, you have to look at the time they were hired. Trent and Caldwell looked like great hires. Both had fantastic resume's. Trent was coach of the year Twice. He had a sweet sixteen appearance. Caldwell had UCLA winning, she had a number one recruiting class. I can't fault a man for thinking they would be good. If they had success before why wouldn't they succeed here? Every candidate mention on here is based on prior success. I don't see anyone saying lets go get a 500 coach, I feel he'll be a good fit and have success here.

Trent had the Lopez twins, Caldwell recruited very well at UCLA.

I don't think anyone has said that LSU couldn't "compete" with the current job openings. The questions are (1) who exactly would they be competing for? and (2) can you unequivocally say that person would do a better job than Les Miles?
I (and I'm sure most pragmatic fans) aren't necessarily against making a change. I am however against making a change with no clear plan for a replacement other than thinking, "We're LSU. We can get any coach we want." Why fire a guy who you KNOW has been a very good HC at your school to bring in a yet unknown coach who may or may not be a good HC for your program?
As far as I can tell, there are no highly successful coaches out there who may be looking for a job change. Now if the AD knows that someone like Pete Carroll, John Harbaugh, Urban Myer, heck even Jimbo Fisher, is quietly looking to make a change at the end of the year, then I certainly wouldn't have a problem with nabbing one of those guys while the timing is right. However, LSU is not in a position where they HAVE to make a change because the program has bottomed out.
What would be worse? Keeping a consistently good Les Miles and hoping he makes the necessary changes to go from consistently very good to consistently championship great? Or, hiring an up and comer who MIGHT be good, but might also wreck the program for several years (see Tennessee when they got rid of Fulmer)? And don't be naive enough to thing that LSU can't fall from the ranks of contender very quickly. Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas, USC, Michigan all were powerhouses that fell from grace to become bad to mediocre programs for some period of time.
