Got some leftover gift cards for Academy, and I think I need a new skinning knife.
What brands do you guys like for under $50?
Buck
Kershaw
Gerber
Outdoor edge
Others?
And what types of steel are best for holding an edge?
I'm really digging this one, but don't know about its quality.

I use a cheap, 6 inch, flexible, filet knife for deer. It was like 15 bucks at walmart, but has served me well for 4-5 years. I start with it razor sharp and hit it with a honing rod throughout the process. I very much prefer this type of knife now compared to "skinning knives" that tend to be thick, bulky and inflexible.

I like my case knives.
I had an old timer that looked just like the one you linked but it had a black handle. Think it was like $15 but that was in the early 2000s. Held an edge just fine.

Get that Schrade Christmas gift set, baw. Skinning knife and pocket knife for like $25 or $30.
Eta: upon looking at your link you definitely should look at the gift sets. They have them with this knife in the set.
Also, it's old timer, not schrade.

I always used Gerber when I had my lawn service. Cheap, good quality, held an edge for about as long before I lost one, picked a new one up at Walmart online next day.

Camillus folding knife, titanium bonded blade, $25 from Walmart.
Very satisfied with this knife.

Havalon. That is the only answer when it comes to skinning knives.

Buck
Kershaw
Gerber
Are the three that immediately leap to mind - I have a very old Ka-Bar folder that looks exactly like a Buck of that era. It has not been well maintained. I'd like to find a pro to bring the edge back - but it may be just a show piece going forward (I saved it from a dumpster).
Gerber has served me well at this price point, but I must say that I am impressed as hell with Kershaw. Not enough to buy one, as I've gotten spoiled and I'm all about the butterfly (Benchmade) now.

You just have to do the best you can under $50, baw. You're not going to get a lot of exotic steel choices at that point. A lot of 440 and a lot of Aus8.

ST!,
I'm prefer the simplicity and ease of cleaning w/ fixed blade knives. Why not try the Outdoor Edge Swing Blade? I don't have one, but I've thought of buying one. It looks like it would be a very useful knife. Bad news.....it's $5 over your budget.

Outdoor edge swingblade does look pretty cool. I think I can swing an extra 5 bucks. Lol
I've been here long enough to know that the suggested budget in these threads is never enough to buy the OBs recommendation. Lol

I need another deer skinning knife like I need a hole in my head, but you're making it REALLY hard to avoid buying it....

The cheapest skinning knife I have ever ownwed holds an edge better than any other.
Idk why, but this little $20 knife is insane. I actually own a few of them. I keep on in the kitchen for trimming meat because it makes my knife set look like it's made of plastic

Can't go wrong with Gerber. Hell, damn near my whole life I thought I was big shite because I'd moved up from buck knife to Gerber! Damn good knife but apparently there's way wasaaay better

I tried a Mora because several people on here were singing its praises. I love it for skinning and it's around 15 bucks.
