What do you do when you're interrupted by a stranger on the street?

You know what I mean...

You're briskly walking downtown in a hurry to make a meeting or you're pumping gas at your vehicle (really a sitting duck) and a young male approaches you with, "Excuse me sir..."

What do you do or say to show that you aren't interested in hearing their long speech and how they need a few bucks for gas, bus fare, etc?

I just ignore them while they're talking to me. Especially those salesmen at gas stations trying to sell the car wash stuff.

I tell them I'm in 200,000 dollars of debt, and that they don't know my struggle

Then I get back into my leased lambo and peel out in their face

shake your head, look them in eye and say "I promise you, I'm not who you're looking for." and keep looking at them till they go away.

19 times out of 20 I ignore them and act like I don't hear or say I don't have anything on me.

The one time I recent memory I gave anybody some money was about 2 weeks ago at a gas station. I got out of my car and the guy wasn't a jerk or approach me, he kept his distance back where he was. He also said "have any pennies to spare" instead of asking for a few bucks, which I appreciated. So I gave him a buck on teh way out.

"Excuse me, do you have any money?"

Shuts them down.

I ignore them if they are behind. If I have to respond, I smile and say "No thank you" like they are offering me something. This gets them confused a little. I will not engage in any sort of conversation with them.

One time I gave a guy a few cigarettes because he didn't ask me for money, then when I came out, I saw him picking butts off the ground, so I gave him a few. He thanked me and I thanked him.

I listen long enough to find out if it is a legit request (directions to the nearest good restaurant, that sort of thing). If he's just asking for money I tell him I don't carry cash - which is almost always true anyway.
