Gf took me there Saturday night for my BDay dinner. We went with 4 small plates. First the shrimp with garlic and red chilis.
Second the brussels sprouts
Third was the ceviche with shrimp and mahi mahi.
And last the mussels in a chilled vinegarette
We also ordered a bottle of the red sangria. The shrimp and the sprouts were out favorite. For all you garlic lovers, these two dishes were loaded with it. The sprouts were cooked in a roasted garlic so there was a subtle sweet and nutty flavors to balance the red chilis. The shrimp were with fresh garlic. We had plenty bread for dipping. The ceviche was good but flavors were a bit subtle. Mussels were huge and the lemon vinegarette was refreshing.
Overall I would go back and make the shrimp and sprouts a meal in itself. FYI dining room is very small so expect a small wait.

Would 4 small plates be enough for a husky Baw with an appetite?

I dig the place, and I think they execute what they do really well.
Part of me wishes they'd up the quality of the ingredients they use, particularly on their paellas, but I get their desire to stay at the price-point they are.

Nice write up, but I've never heard of anyone going to Lola's and not ordering paella. You'll need a return trip for the paella.
Lola is always a fun place. Did you have Ole eye patch for your waiter? He's the best.

Have you had the paella before? What did you think of it?

It's the only entrée I've had at Lola. I think in general it's pretty good. As someone else posted, they don't use first rate ingredients which makes the dish suffer, but it's still enjoyable. Lola is one of the more affordable places in town.

I was at Lola's on Thursday...it's a really fun place. Good food and great value. Patch is awesome.
The Spinach Linguini is sooooo freaking good.
I tried the Shrimp Pasta for my entree and it did not disappoint.
They do not make their own dinner rolls FYI as i saw patch reload the bread warmer with rolls from a huge bag filled with them.
I live in the hood, so it's an easy no brainer for me when I'm in the mood for Garlic. :)

Highly recommend the crabmeat tropical and the fresh mozzarella & tomato basil salad for another small plate option.

Each one of those plates looks delicious. I'm going to have to try the mussels someday.

It is a good date place and fun. Never going to blow you away. I have enjoyed it on my visits.

Paella is overrated IMO
If I'm going to a Spanish restaurant I'm ordering anything but Paella.

I don't get the appeal either

I think it's one of those things that is plain Jane enough to where the less adventurous diners can eat it and feel like they're cultured.

Growing up eating jambalaya I never saw the appeal of paella. Looks too bland for me.

Paella, if well made, is great. frick the haters.

Jambalaya is arroz con pollo for coon asses. Nothing special.
