Today's Advocate headline, "I-10 widening garners little enthusiasm"

Say it ain't so Joe. Everybody I know thinks it should happen.

The state’s latest plan to widen Interstate 10 through the heart of Baton Rouge is sparking opposition, skepticism and a smattering of wait and see.
“It’s still a bad idea, absolutely,” said Troy Menier, whose family has operated Troy’s Barber Shop a few yards off Perkins Road by the interstate for nearly half a century.
Irma Jones took a break from her exercise class at the Leo S. Butler Community Center to criticize the state’s proposal.
Under the plan, a new lane in each direction would be added to I-10 between the bridge and the I-10/12 split at a cost of up to $350 million.

Does this sound a bit light to anyone else?

The problem is the bridge. It's not the number of lanes up to the bridge.

“The second reason is Baton Rouge already has enough traffic,” Menier said. “Put in more lanes, and it will have more traffic.”
From the article. The I-10/110 exchange is the worst engineering possible for the city.

That's the place that uses clippers attached to vacuum cleaners, weird.

This is the problem. Just get the hell out of the way, people. You can't complain about shitty infrastructure and then inhibit the very progress of the need you're bitching about.
This state is going to continue to hamstring progress of many because of the butthurt of the few.

They should have built a loop yrs ago...traffic is horrible between laf all the way thru br because we have idiots running stuff

I think it needs to happen, but another bridge near Plaqumine should have priority over this...

I just hope they don't do anything to change the Overpass area before developers can figure out how much more shite they can cram into the area. I want to see how far our "planning" commission will let things go and I want to see how much traffic and parking hassle people will put up with to eat at the new it place that paid 225 to write an article and give it an award.

If space is the issue, then why is nobody talking about stacking one side of the interstate over the other? I.e, put the east bound lanes on top of the westbound from the bridge to just past College Dr.

Aight, all I'm interested in is the opening of the Stumberg extension. It looks good to me. They need to open it now.

Same old story: by the time they finish widening it, it will need to be widened again. An outer loop is the only answer and it's the reason Houston, Atlanta and Raleigh all have one or more.

Just spend like $100 billion to double-deck I-10 across the bridge all the way to Hammond with a 300 ft high upper deck with zero exits into the city so that anyone that wants to just drive through BR, can. Kinda like Austin, but much, much higher. I don't even want to know I'm driving over BR. We'll call it the BR basin bridge.

I am starting to believe that widening I-10 and building a loop are 1970s ideas. I definitely believe something should be done but I think a more modern technological idea should also be brought to the table.
My ideas would be to give incentives:
To businesses who start using different hours. Like 7am to 4pm or 6am to 3pm (just throwing things out there)
Also, give incentives to businesses who work four 10 hour days and either take Monday or Friday off. Or any day they want.
Another idea is to give incentives to businesses that allow employees to work from home. I know in my office in Baton Rouge many of our employees could definitely work from home. Maybe come to the office once per week and then they could use a cube or share and office or conference room.

Turn Florida Blvd into an expressway. Off ramps to the service roads with overpasses at major intersections.
Give it a NASCAR theme, and the LP crowd will run with it

I don't think there is any way Baton Rouge can avoid needing another lane added in that section of I-10 between downtown and College, including new shoulders where possible. There are over 100,000 cars per day on that section and it narrows down to one lane eastbound at the 110 split. It was an inadequate design 30 years ago, and it's a disaster today.
They can do it without disrupting the Perkins Road overpass area if they close down the on/off ramps onto Perkins and have traffic go around to Acadian.
Also, they will need sound walls and some retaining walls....maybe the city can lobby for nice looking ones with vegetation, and landscaping etc.

The issue has never been the engineering. It's always and forever will be the political side and trying to please every person in the world which is mathematically impossible.
I've seen engineering drawings for widing as well as loop plans dated from 1977...let that sink in...1977.

The problem is, we don't have the money to build it. The greenlight projects have completely ruined any sort of reserve we have to fix the roads we already have.
