Seriously?

The family of Sandra Bland filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Tuesday against a Texas trooper, a sheriff’s office and her jailers, accusing them of being responsible for the woman's apparent suicide in a county jail.
The suit, which was filed in a federal court in Texas, said that officials violated her constitutional rights. The family was seeking damages but no monetary amount was listed in the court papers.
Seriously?
quote:
Bland, who is black, was pulled over in her car on July 10 by a white state trooper, Brian Encinia, for failing to signal a lane change.
The discovery of Bland's body in her cell on July 13 with a trash bag around her neck in an apparent hanging provoked suspicions of racist treatment.
quote:
Local officials have said she was not mistreated in jail. Still, her death has helped fuel growing criticism of U.S. policing amid a string of incidents involving the treatment of minorities by police across the United States.
The lawsuit said Encinia "intentionally, willfully, wantonly, and unreasonably deprived Sandra Bland of her rights, privileges and immunities secured by the U.S. Constitution."
quote:
In addition to Encinia, the suit named the Texas Department of Public Safety, Waller County, the county's sheriff's department and two jailers as defendants.
The Texas Department of Public Safety has said Encinia acted improperly in making the stop. Bland, 28, was pulled over by near Prairie View, northwest of Houston, for failing to signal a lane change.
The stop escalated into a verbal altercation after Encinia asked Bland to put out a cigarette and she refused. Bland was arrested and charged with assaulting an officer, a felony, with the incident recorded by the police car's dashboard camera.
The suit also says her jailers did not do enough to protect or provide medical care.

Valid or not. If you didn't think this was coming? You were kidding yourself.

I'd sue too. People aren't supposed to be found hanging in their cells after sitting in jail for days for minor infractions.

Who woulda thought?

People commit suicide in jail all the time.

and the only thing they have that makes this "suspicious" is some sloppily filled out paperwork?
harldy a smoking gun.

Exactly this

you have to sue everyone involved for procedural reasons
i have no issue with this. it just further requires LEO to justify their actions and also gives them the ability to establish the fact that she killed herself even more strongly

So tired of this story. Stupid shite that stupid people do and pay the price for always gets blown out of proportion. Moving on.

Where were her family and friends? Did she not call anyone?
Edit: I just read that her sister and a local friend were notified. They couldn't scratch together $500 between 3 adults to get her out? What the frick? No one has credit cards?
Holy shite, It's fricked up that she was in jail over a traffic violation but more fricked up that her family knew she had mental issues and still let her sit in a jail cell for days over $500.

She didn't hang herself. She was an educated lady who had just gotten a new job!
No way she hung herself. The cops staged all of this.

This whole thing just leaves a boring taste in my mouth:

This sloppily filled out paperwork cost a woman her life. There are procedures in place for dealing with suicidal people. Waller county didn't follow those procedures and now they'll have to pay.

No amount of hate for police officers or white people will change the fact that she committed suicide. The conspiracy theories around her "murder" are absolute nuts.

Can't say I blame them.
That was a BS arrest, and they get what follows it.
Don't hire idiots.

Which is more likely? Cops staged a suicide to cover a murder or garden variety incompetence led to a situation where she had access to tools she could use to kill herself.
