Travel and Leisure- Airfares will drop to record lows this fall

A Justice Department investigation into airline collusion, sinking fuel costs and softer demand could push domestic airfares to record lows next month.
The price of an average round-trip airline ticket will slip to $244 next month, about 5% lower than the same time last year, according to a new forecast by Hopper, a Montreal-based company that analyzes airfare data.
Prices will will average about $249 through the end of the year. That’s about 2.8% cheaper than in 2014 and 6.8% cheaper than in 2013. All told, fares haven’t been this low in at least four years.
“Typically, prices will fall during the latter part of summer before stabilizing in the fall and early winter,” explains Patrick Surry, Hopper’s chief data scientist. “Since this summer was cheaper than last summer, we expect prices to remain lower than last year through the rest of this year, returning slightly closer to normal by the end of the year.”

I'll be keeping an eye out for these cheap fares and will update my cheap airfare threads accordingly. Wonder if we'll see roundtrip tickets for less than the usual $97 to Chicago, $80 to Dallas, $180 to Los Angeles, etc.

Shocking.

Well what I'd be curious to know is the % at which ticket prices rose when the price of oil increased vs now when oil is falling. If I had to guess, airlines are making bank now because they're keeping the prices high aka the collusion the DOJ is investigating. I've been able to notice it just through looking at google flights

Airfares to Germany from MSY have been exactly stable for travel through the rest of this year. I know because I check weekly.

I bet someone a little smarter than me could put together a line graph... that would serve to piss me off.

Give it a few more weeks when the airlines realize they have no bookings to europe in the fall, then we'll hopefully see the prices fall. I think the next few updates I do will be to international destinations.

What's the cheapest you can find MSY to Costa Rica?

$400 MSY to Liberia, Dec 7/8- 14/15.
$340 MSY to San Jose, Last two weeks of August through the first two weeks of November. Pretty much any day
Southwest is at $430ish for November/December

Liberia only if you are going to stay in Guanacaste, otherwise San Jose and get a puddle jumper or a rental car if and only if you are going to be there a while.
It's weird to think of SWA in foreign destinations.
Thanks CuseT, you are quite the resource.

It is laughable that the government is investigating airlines for gauging the public. This is the same government that is constantly seeking to raise taxes and fees associated airfare.
DHS just tried to push through a plan that would require you pay the TSA fee twice if you had a connecting flights vs. booking a non-stop. Outside of a small handful of airports you don't have to go through screening if you are connecting. The next time you book a flight, look at how much of your total is taxes.
Airlines maybe paying less for fuel currently, but instead of dropping prices they are re-investing in their hard and soft products. Which is something the public has also been asking for.
If price was the main contributing factor Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant would have a lot more repeat customers.

I'm going to need a few mileage runs to retain DL Plat

Headed to Disney in November. What's the best site to monitor airfare prices? And what's usually the best time to buy tickets? I've heard about 6 weeks prior to the trip but not sure where I even heard that from.

how is a 5% drop in airfares a "record low"?
Posted on 7/29/15 at 7:08 pm to Dale Murphy
Doesn't really fluctuate much outside 3 weeks before. Then they jack up the rates for the last minute flyers

I'll keep an eye out for a good mileage run out of dca. I saw on google flights for AA LAX-DFW-LGA for $75 each way...
