Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black is rising up there.

She's basically playing 8 different characters with DRASTICALLY different personalities and accents...many at the same time.

^^this is a great choice^^ in keeping with one in a supporting role, Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone.

But overall, best ever in film I've got to give it to Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs.

Comedic role... shout out to Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda. Just brilliant.

For television... have to give it to Bryan Cranston. As Anthony Hopkins wrote in a penned letter to him...the greatest acting he's ever seen. What a compliment.

Being far from a legitimate movie critic myself, I'll keep my comments on the thread to things I actually feel qualified to discuss.

1. Robert Duvall as Gus in LD is as good as any character you'll see. An amazing performance enhanced by other great actors around him.

2. I read One Flew Over before I saw it, and that role was set up perfectly for Nicholson. It's almost like it was written specifically for him.

Glenn Close Fatal Attraction
Patricia Neill Hud
Vivian Leigh in Gone w the Wind
Edward Norton American History X (even though I hated that movie)
Anthony Perkins Psycho
Marlon Brando On The Waterfront

PS: random Trivia - Patricia Neal was married to writer Raold Dahl "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"

Russell Crowe in The Insider. Nearly unrecognizable as Jeffery Wigan. Terrific subtle performance from someone best known for very different types of roles

That certainly deserves mention.

As does Charlize Theron in Monster but looks like this thread is mostly about actors and not actresses. ;)
