If it's what I'm thinking of, that stuff is a byproduct of something from one of the chemical plants. It has a consistency similar to powered limestone. Or at least a chemical makeup that's similar. We've used it by the truckload on our fields in place of lime. It's not as potent, so it required a lot more tonnage. Even with free delivery to the farm, it was still a pretty good size hassle to be out there spreading it all the damn time.

This is the correct answer. Normally, gypsum could be used in all kinds of construction products and you'd think the gypsum byproduct would go to that. However, due to the way the ore used to make fertilizer associates with other elements, it usually contains a VERY small amount of things like uranium and radium. So, the phosphogypsum usually ends up being very slightly radioactive. The radioactivity is above EPA limits for use in commercial products, so instead of being able to make construction materials out of it, they just pile it up and make gypstacks.

Yep. Brother works there. Funny thing is that it is to radioactive to sell, yet there is a crew of people who work on it 40 hrs a week. Parish or government quit giving them permits to expand. So they have to go up with the pile

Gypstack from Mosaic for the huge pile in Convent. They have a sulfuric acid/phosphoric acid plant there. Base products for fertilizer made at the Mosaic Faustina plant in Donaldsonville.

They are impressive. Can't understand why they aren't able to blend it off into roads or something.
