I love the book, too. In fact, I read the book first which I agree, is even better.
He also wrote Flyboys which was pretty good too (not related to the movie I think)

Enemy at the Gates anyone?
Pretty underrated IMO.

I talked to an old timer, 92 at the time, and he served with Patton all over Europe & was only a mile away when Patton was killed in that "car wreck". He said he's seen a lot of war movies over the years, and to him, Saving Private Ryan was the most realistic rendering of actual battle scenes; the only thing missing was the "horrible smells" that men being killed & mutilated cause. Next for him was Band of Brothers.

Ah yes, that movie that is so essential you can't even think of the name of it.
1. I retracted that.
2. At the time, I just could not remember the number of the U-boat ... 571 is what I am thinking.
3. Lighten up...or go the music board.

I thought Defiance was pretty good though it's not your typical WWII movie

I'd remove Flags of Our Fathers. Really isn't that good of a film.
I'd disagree.

You cant be serious? Can you name another movie that depicts tank battles better?

Tora!Tora!Tora! and Longest Day are pretty much indispensable. As is the first 20-30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan.

First drop that drivel, Thin Red Line was not accurate to Guadalcanal at all.
Yeah, it was terrible. "Guadalcanal Diary" is far better.
Also, if you're looking for a James Jones treatment, "From Here To Eternity" is an outstanding film.

Battleground
Best, most accurate depiction of the Battle of the Bulge until BoB came along.

Perhaps you are overdoing it a bit.
You listed 20+ movies. That's got to be at least 75+ hours of viewing. You need that much to understand? That's like an entire college semester. Perhaps limit to 10 movies??

Midway.
Yeah, I missed this first time around - as bad as the forced romance story was (and it was horrific) - the rest of film overwhelms this with its awesomeness.
Best carrier aircraft porn film of all time (yes - better than Top Gun).
ETA: And The Final Countdown - although those are the top 3.
