All that circuitry and no kill switch.
I applaud the low-budget effort but the movie failed for me on several levels, not the least of which was that Nathan was totally unconvincing as someone capable of inventing AI.
This was a dialogue-driven movie, and both the dialogue and the acting were on the poor side. I struggled to stay awake. 5/10

Just watched this and went in completely blind except that it had something to do with AI and that it was supposed to be really good.
I was not disappointed. Great movie. Isaacs was great, the score was incredible, and I was in suspense almost the whole time. I've skimmed the thread so I don't want or need to rehash everything. One thing I will say is whoever thinks she went back for him is just wishing

Just watched this movie. After seeing it a few times in the XBox store, I decided to give it a shot knowing absolutely NOTHING about it.
Blown away.
I couldn't agree more with this.

Finally saw it last night and loved it.
Question: since it seems clear that Nathan understood the true "nature" of Ava, why was he not more disturbed about her ability to control those power outages? Was it even true that she was the one controlling them?
I loved the fact that the audience was the one taking the Turing Test. In fact, I paused it when the shite started to go down with the knife in the hall and asked my wife: "right now...do you have empathy for Ava/Kyoko?"...and she said "yes". This reminded me of The Prestige, in that the the movie itself was a magic trick.
Why was Kyoko able to be out and about? Was she programmed differently? If so, then why was she susceptible to Ava whispering into her ear something that was evidently spark enough to finish off Nathan? Was the found footage we saw of the AZN-bot beating her own limbs off in a desperate rage to escape a different one than Kyoko?
All in all, this was just excellent. The females in my family always bitch and moan if I want to watch a "robot" movie...they prefer "real" movies. I tell them it should be obvious by now that these AI movies dig WAY more into the questions and philosophy of humanity than "real" movies.
I don't know anything about this director...is he the next Nolan-esque uber talent? How do you think this movie would have been different/better/worse if Nolan had had a lot of input and/or directed it?

A realistic Singularity movie IS a doomsday scenario. The Singularity is legitimately doomsday. The loss of consciousness and the self en masse? That's even worse than the world just exploding into tiny pieces.

I think it was a combination of hubris and drunkenness - Nathan seems to have 2 tragic flaws - either of which he could have survived, but proved to be a fatal combination (in essence, he is the protagonist of this Greek tragedy).

I'm assuming he had her autonomy features tuned down - this made her more compliant, less directly threatening, but then also susceptible to Ava's suggestions. I do not believe the film, as presented, implied that Kyoko was self-aware.

I wasn't sure about that, either. It seemed like Nathan was having a good time testing the various physical features of these earlier models. He certainly had "a type" and recall that Ava cannibalized a functioning arm from yet another Asian-appearing female model in one of the storage closets.

Yeah - I liked it a lot. I just watched the ginger earlier this year in About Time. He tends to have a nose for good scripts and good projects (both really sort of unconventional, contemporary science fiction films), if that small sample is any indication.

I know there has been at least some chatter about the drunken routine being a fake tableau arranged to further manipulate Caleb. The big flaw in that, seemingly, is the fact that he did really appear to be passed-out drunk on the couch the time that Caleb took his key card.

Not to get too far off topic in this thread, but I wouldn't have known about About Time if it weren't for the M/TV board, so guys and gals.

This is a viable POV, but I just don't want a Singularity movie where machines completely enslave or attempt to destroy humanity. We've seen it a thousand times. The only movies that have actually realistically played with a non-Doomsday scenario are Her and Minority Report. I'd rather see a viable Singularity movie that paints how it's truly affected humanity. Started writing a Singularity script a few years ago where an 11 year old girl is mortally wounded and they upload her into the Singularity without her consent in order for her to "survive". It's not sunshine and daisies, but I think it's something that hasn't been explored thoroughly.

That new Johnny Depp movie.
Or Tammy and the T-Rex

I'm thinking more on the lines of a digital Pan's Labyrinth or Spirited Away. Only the beginning of the movie I had in mind takes place in the physical world.

Watched this with my son last Friday night. So, I was just reading this thread earlier today. Was about to bump it then.
I think I appreciate the movie more as digest it myself. I am going to watch it again completely just for the scene with the big reveal. Want to focus on Caleb's expressions because I think I remember him looking like he realizes he's been had.

Is there an implication that he was not supposed to be able to watch her when she outfitted herself in front of all the "lockers" containing the other models?

I watched this tonight based on seeing this thread and the fact I had a free Red Box rental. Thanks
It was a great film.
Couple of thoughts on it.
Although parts of it were easy to figure out, most parts were not, imo.
1. I assumed Kyoko was a robot from the first time she appeared in the film. At first, I assumed she was an early prototype that he kept around as a servant (in more ways than one)... then at times I thought she might be the real test for Caleb.. Be presented with Ava (obvious robot) and see if he can figure out Kyoko was one... Obviously he didn't, and after finding out she was one even questioned if he was one (cutting arm scene).
2. I also wondered about the power outages and whether Nathan was causing them to see if what Ava was telling Caleb during them were the test to see if Caleb trusted and believed Ava. I mean, what better test to see if a Robot is believable as a human than to have the robot convince you not to trust another human (your boss for that matter) and make you care about them instead.
Basically I kept going back and forth on whether Ava was lying, Nathan was lying (like completely - faking being drunk, faking the videos with the other AI's, faking not knowing what was being said during the power outages, etc), and if they were lying.. then were they actually bad or was it just a science experiment using Caleb to test whether or not he would believe, trust, and care for the AI over a human being.
I think it kind of became a combination of all those things... And, although I could see some people saying they could predict the ending, I think that those people are full of shite.
I think they, like me, predicted a bunch of different scenarios and endings... and it just so happened that one of them turned out to be the way it ended so they claimed it to be predictable... which is bullshite.
Overall I thought it was a great movie, best I've seen in a while.
