The reason the Titans made this pick is they feel Matt isn't the answer.
Sorry LSU fans, that the truth.
Also, you can't consistently win in this league without a franchise QB anymore.
Add in the rookie wage scale, massively inflating QB free agent contracts, and it makes the most sense to draft QBs high and fill in the gaps via later rounds and free agency.

Lots of pro-Mettenberger comments by their fans
Yep
I live in Nashville and Mett gets a lot of love on local sports radio

So "arm talent" means they can make every throw, yet Brady and Manning don't have it and Mettenberger does?
Yea, that's exactly what Im saying.
Let's dumb it down even more for you. Nathan Eovaldi (pitcher for the Yankees) throws a fastball at 96-100 mph. Greg Maddux threw a fastball at around 89-91 mph. They are/were both MLB pitchers. Eovaldi has better stuff. Greg Maddux is a HOF pitcher with an inferior fastball. I would even go as far as saying that Eovaldi has better........you guessed it.......arm talent. Got it, dummy?

Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter are LSU fans? Who knew?

Mariota isn't a franchise QB and they will see that pretty early on in his career. If this were 5 years ago he wouldn't have been drafted in the top 20 due to the salary gamble. That's no longer the case since the rookie restructure.

I have nothing against the pick. Period.

Obviously, time will tell. You can't say that yet.

Hence the entire premise of my entire post. Not sure what your point is exactly.

I think we can say that QBs with his background have not fared well in the NFL. We all know that he doesn't have the reps in a pro-style offense that other productive QBs in the league have had prior to starting. That's not opinion, it's fact. QBs can't cheat the process. They need those reps to succeed in the NFL.
I don't think he's a bad pick for every team, he's just a bad pick for the Titans. He needs to sit for a while and he's not going to have that opportunity.

We will see. But like I said, the way the NFL is now you need a franchise guy and 1st round QBs are VERY cheap comparatively. It's one of the main reasons Seattle is so effective right now.

Nothing new, the oilers/titans front office drafting something they don't need. They had WAYYYYY more important holes to fill than drafting a flashy big name QB.
They were probably the worst roster in the league last year. And they draft a quarterback (that will be a bust) when they have a quarterback already.
This is the worst run franchise in the NFL right now, maybe besides the Raiders.

And where was Wilson drafted? Third round.
Where you draft someone isn't as important as who you draft and what you have around them. Seattle pre-Wilson was in a much better spot than the Titans are now.
And Russell Wilson spent 4 years in a pro-style offense at NC State. He can manage those elements of Seattle's offense because of that.
I feel like people are trying to make Mariota into something he's not. You can't make someone a franchise QB just because you take him #2 overall.

I mean just watch their reactions dude. You don't react like that after losing a bet.

This makes a ton of sense.

I agree, but I still think they set their franchise back a solid 3-4 years with the Mariotta pick. Mariotta is not the type of QB that you build a franchise around, he is much closer to RGIII than he is to Cam Newton.
The Titans should have either signed a veteran QB or traded for one if they were confident that Mett was not the answer, and focused their draft on rebuilding their horrendous defense or add to their young offensive line. Whoever ends up starting at QB for them this year will be set up for failure, they have no running game and defenses are going to feast on the inexperienced QB play.

Has there been this much debate over an LSU alum's job security to prove himself a #1 QB when another QB has been drafted vs. competition with the presumed backup (Charlie Whitehurst)? I'll wait for the season to play out before calling Mariota worthless but if they traded back, what's to say they would've gotten him 5, 10, 15 spots later on?
The problems with TN go well beyond one or two draft picks. Granted, they could've done something more impactfucl in trading the pick, instead of drafting Mariota. This team is essentially a 3-year draft process/project away from seeing any kind of progress made. And who was the consensus #3 QB in this draft, Bryce Petty? The immobility of Mett can be balanced with Mariota. Doesn't mean either experiment is going to work. Don't draft a QB and you're in deep shite for another year if Mett gets crushed back there. There's no instant improving this team through one draft. Doesn't matter who their QB is this year.

titans could have traded that pick down, gotten a first, a 2nd and a third for that pick and like next year's 2nd. that could have been like, getting Peat, the kid from duke that plays G, Gregory and someone else on top of the picks they already had. jesus christ they are stupid as hell

Yes, yes there actually has.
Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson.
I tried to bring up the comparison on this board but the LSU admin didn't appreciate it and anchored the thread.

Arm talent means a whole lot more than velocity. It also encompasses movement, accuracy, placement, and consistency. Ya know, all the things greg Maddux had a ton of. BTW, Maddux could throw harder than 91 if he wanted to.

Or conversely you could interpet that as showing how highly valued Marriota was so why would you give it a QB with that much perceived value? I don't know who will be better, but I think the overwhelming favorite--by a wide margin--would be Marriotta.
He was most valuable to the Eagles. Since Chip implemented the offense he ran at Oregon and is running it with the Eagles. If Tennessee changed the offense to a similar style to what the Eagles are running he would be plug and play right now, but he will probably struggle atleast in the interim.

Yup, and when Mariotta gets his opportunity and decides to try and hit the corner against a guy like Watt his season will be over.
